    INTERVIEW WITH ORLANDO JORDAN

Keith Boykin: Hi, thanks for doing the interview. What are you up to these days now that you’ve left the WWE?

Orlando Jordan: Since I’ve left the WWE I’m still wrestling abroad and some in state and doing a lot of wrestling out of the country. [I'm in] Italy. Working on negotiations with Japan. And just Europe in general.

Keith Boykin: How do you like it?

Orlando Jordan: It’s great. Of course you know with the WWE we travel 288 days a year. Somewhere around there. I definitely spent my time, my share out of the country. I have a strong fan base out there…

Keith Boykin: How did you get into wrestling?

Orlando Jordan: Wrestling was something that I chose to do, I made a decision when I was about 6 years old. From there I went on to school…I went venturing out. I got my first training in Maryland…with Dan McDevitt.

Keith Boykin: What made you get interested when you were 6?

Orlando Jordan: My mom really influenced me. I was just a big wrestling fan in general when I was growing up. You know, watching Rocky Johnson. Just something that was embedded in my blood I guess.

One of the first things I did was boxing. My brother, my uncle. My cousins boxed….A little bit of gymnastics at a young age. And eventually I picked up amateur wrestling….I pursued it all the way through college. I had a very successful amateur wrestling career. State championship. Four time All-American in college.

Keith Boykin: Where did you wrestle in college?

    Orlando Jordan: Boise State

    Bobby Lashley spears Orlando Jordan

Keith Boykin: Do most professional wrestlers have college experience?

Orlando Jordan: No. Not really. There are a few that do. Guys like Kurt Angle… Shelton Benjamin…Guys like Charlie Haus. Bobby Lashley.

Keith Boykin: Shelton and Bobby are black. Do most black professional wrestlers start in college?

Orlando Jordan: Not necessarily. It just happens to be that Bobby Lashley has a very good background.

Keith Boykin: What's it like being a black professional wrestler?

Orlando Jordan: There’s a long history. I got my start with McDevitt…I got picked up with the Urban Wrestler. UWA. Used to be on UPN….I want to say 2000, 2001. So I got my first start on TV. From there, Rocky Johnson has been like family to me. I consider him my uncle. Took me under his wing….[It helped to] prepare myself for the WWE.

Keith Boykin: Were you always an athlete?

Orlando Jordan: No doubt. I’ve been an athlete ever since I was a little kid. Born and bred athlete. Very athletic family. The youngest of 11 kids, I had no choice to.

Keith Boykin: You’re a big guy. Have you always been bigger than your friends and peers?

Orlando Jordan: Growing up, I was a little guy….I don’t think I was really the biggest guy…because I was the youngest, so to me everybody was big. I didn’t start talking till I was about 8 years old really.

I think it was something I just grew out of. I went to speech school. I didn’t go to school right away. And when I started talking I had a really bad time with speech. And as you can imagine, it was a pretty hard time…Now when you see me on TV, I can’t shut the hell up.

Keith Boykin: Where did you grow up?

Orlando Jordan: I was born in Salem, New Jersey. My family predominantly grew up in New York. Brooklyn, particularly. From there, we did a lot of moving. With 11 kids, my family, we grew up very poor. We worked in tomato fields. Pepper fields in Jersey. Getting up at 4 o’clock in the morning picking peppers and then me and my sisters would go to school.

That’s how we grew up. And we did a lot of moving around. And then finally my mom moved to Richmond, Virginia. And I met a coach out there in high school….who was a real big influence in my life…I got into wrestling because I was a kid trying to get out of trouble…It wasn’t what I wanted. [I wanted to be a professional wrestler.] What I was looking for. But it was the closest thing and I excelled at it.

Keith Boykin: What weight class were you in high school?

Orlando Jordan: As a ninth grader, I wrestled at 177.

    Keith Boykin:As a ninth grader?

Orlando Jordan: I was a tell slender kid. Very shredded kid. I had no body fat on me…Coach said to me you were working too much, you need to go home and eat. I was just tall and slender. Then I spent 3 years in high school, can you imagine with my speech problem growing up, put me behind in school…I went to summer school, night school and regular day school for 2 and a half years to graduate [with my classmates] along with working. And then my coach started a painting company when I was in ninth grade. And that thing still runs today….Apple Painting. It helps out athletes, student wrestlers.

Keith Boykin: And then you went to Idaho. What was that like?

Orlando Jordan: It was a big culture shock out there. Being away from everybody. Eighteen, nineteen-year old kid leaving home and going out on his own and experiencing life. That’s what I decided to do to be successful. And my mom felt the same way….I’ve always known her as being a lady that had illness. She had diabetes. So I was always taking care of her. I graduated from high school, I didn’t even live with my mom for the last year and a half. I lived with one of my friends. She lived with one of her friends…So it was a hard thing.

Keith Boykin: When did you know you were bisexual?

Orlando Jordan: At a very young age. It was something that I didn’t understand. I didn’t really know how to address or handle. I went through some bad experiences as a kid. I felt very confused.

Keith Boykin: What made you decide to come out, this year right?

Orlando Jordan: Here's how the story happened, coming out in public this year. My myspace. I used my middle name on the account. Most people don’t know who my middle name is except for my friends and family. I had that account forever and on my account I always put Bi. I’ve been open for quite a few years actually. Then my friends started telling me there were a lot of impostors [on myspace] and they persuaded me to put on my real name….And people started visiting the site and they discovered it…

And I guess that made big news. Being a professional athlete and being openly bisexual. But I’ve been openly bisexual for years. I would say for about 6 years. But I’m the type of person. It’s not a crutch. My close friends and my close family, they knew. Everybody that’s important in my life, they knew. That’s what was important to me. And I didn’t really care about what anybody else thought. From the time I worked with WWE, I was openly bi. It was pretty obvious, and eventually everybody knew. I still have my friends and I got along well. You always have a few haters. That’s natural…But I never had anybody in my face…

"The first words out of Vince McMahon's mouth were, 'Goddamn it Orlando that’s money!?' He wanted to do it right away but somewhere along the way it got stopped."

Keith Boykin: From the time you started, everybody knew?

Orlando Jordan: Not everybody knew because I didn’t know everybody there….I never hid anything. I was actually dating my ex-girlfriend at the time. My friends knew…We would go out to clubs and it was pretty obvious when [they were talking to women and] I was over there talking to a guy…I broke up with my girlfriend because she didn’t like me traveling. But she was well aware of my bisexuality.

My peers. My friends. I was open with them. And then the ones I wasn’t open with they saw that I was and asked. And I said 'yeah I am.' I never had anything to hide. If you have the balls to come up to me and ask and you’re a friend of mine, then you have every right to know that. But if you didn’t, then it’s none of your business.

Keith Boykin: Did the reaction surprise you?

Orlando Jordan: If you look at my myspace, if you look at my comments, 90 percent of the comments on myspace are positive. And then you get a few people. That 10 percent who are haters…They’re probably in denial themselves or they’re just haters. I learned at an early age…I realized that people make things a big deal. People blow things out of proportion. My sexuality was a big deal to me in my life because I made it a big deal….Either I’m going to get on living my life or let it consume me and be a failure. And I decided to stop making a big deal out of who I am when I know who I am. And start worrying about other things like being successful in in life.

Keith Boykin: How were you treated by your family when you came out?

Orlando Jordan: I have six sisters and four brothers. One of my sisters asked me and when I told her I said 'Yeah.' She knew. I had 10 brothers and sisters and my oldest sister is 50 something years old. My oldest sister is old enough to be my mom…I didn’t grow up with most of my brothers and sisters….By the time I was in high school most of them had all left…She was accepting of it…So she knew about it. She always knew about it. And over time, it’s just how it came out. I just never made a big deal out of it….The others found out about it because of me doing this whole story line.

Keith Boykin: What about this WWE story line with you as a bisexual wrestler? Where did that come from?

Orlando Jordan: That was my idea. I had a very good career with Bradshaw…I had a very good career…I had a good time with that and as we started dwindling down the writers seemed like they didn’t know what to do. At the beginning of the year, we had been talking and stuff and they said Orlando we don’t know what to do with you. And my whole response was how can you not know what to do with somebody who’s been on TV for several years….The longest reigning United States champion in Smackdown to date.

So I went to Vince [McMahon] and we talked….about the next move…and he said well you know we wanted to do the role with me having the boxing background and the family ties with Rocky Johnson. Wanted to do the Jack Johnson, the Muhammad Ali type of deal. More like the Terrell Owens…I guess that’s what they’re trying to do now with the guy they call the MVP….

Vince said Orlando you’re a good looking guy. You’re a classy guy. You’re very well spoken. You get some of the best looking girls and some of the best looking guys….You’re well dressed and you’re a very classy guy and good natured in general….And we were going to do something with that. And then they came up with MVP…And Vince really said you can do that…but it’s been done before….He told me I was a great talent and said he wanted me to do something different. So that’s when I came up with [the idea]…

What if I walk up there with a beautiful girl…and at the same time on my other side is a good looking guy walking me down to the ring…The guy has a towel and the girl opens the ropes…They parade me down, towel me down. I come down with a nice looking robe. I take the robe off and hand it to one of them…Before I start, the female comes over and gives me a nice kiss…then the guy comes down and wipes me down…and I go to walk away and…I go over and give the guy a nice kiss…and then he hops down….And I go out there and everybody’s looking at me like 'did you just see what happened'…And I walk out like nothing happened.

Keith Boykin: How did Vince McMahon react?

Orlando Jordan: The first words out of his mouth were, 'Goddamn it Orlando that’s money!?' He wanted to do it right away but somewhere along the way it got stopped. I’m not sure why but it get stopped.

Keith Boykin: Do you think he got cold feet?

Orlando Jordan: I think the writers didn’t know what to do with it. Vince was really for it. And when he tells you that it’s money that means his hands were in it. I think the writers got cold feet and they started worrying about the network….We didn’t want it to be overboard. It wasn’t a crutch , it was just part of my personality…

Keith Boykin: But you knew it was going to be a big deal?

Orlando Jordan: Oh yeah. It would be controversy. It would have been on ESPN News.

Keith Boykin: Do you think part of the reason it didn't happen was because you are bisexual in real life.

    Orlando Jordan: No.

Keith Boykin: No, not that Vince McMahon was concerned but that others were concerned.

Orlando Jordan: No. I think they thought it was too heavy for the network….to have an athlete of my caliber openly bi and also as an openly bi characters.

Keith Boykin: Are there other bi or gay athletes in professional wrestling

Orlando Jordan: There’s bi and gay athletes in every sport you can imagine…I’m sure there are. If it’s not known, there’s a reason and I can respect that.

Keith Boykin: What do you plan to do when you're finished wrestling?

Orlando Jordan: I strive for one thing and that’s to be successful in whatever I do. Wrestling is my heart and soul and I love doing that….The purpose for me is to be able to have an impact on people, and the way for me to have an impact on people is to do what I do best….being that I’m bisexual…my best friend we always talk about we want to use my celebrity to be able to impact younger people who are bisexual or gay just to let them know that there is somebody out there just like them…Get a chance to talk to kids maybe who have been abused in their lives…Sometimes you have to get yourself established to get there. And that’s one of the things I have been working on. I’m not with WWE anymore. I’m still very much wrestling…So when I be back on TV, I would say most likely I will be. Being in WWE and developing a public figure…gives me a chance to do other things. To grow my company, Wildcat Entertainment, particularly clubs….And promoting other people whether it’s in music or whatever it’s in. I also got a few endorsements….

Keith Boykin: You're in Florida now. How do you like it?

Orlando Jordan: Florida’s great. I chose Florida because…my family is originally from the West Indies, from Barbados. I tell people I’m a warm-blooded person. Traveling as much as I do, I always like to come home to a warm house.

Keith Boykin: Are you in a relationship?

Orlando Jordan: I’m currently not in a relationship. I’m an available bachelor.

Keith Boykin: I do a series on my web site where I ask prominent people to tell me five of their favorite things. Can you tell me five of your favorite things?

    Orlando Jordan:

    1. I love traveling, particularly to Italy.
    2. I love Spanish culture. I’m a sucker for Spanish, especially Spain, Cubans, Puerto Ricans.
    3. I love Japanese food.
    4. I love music. I love being around my house singing. That’s from my mom. She passed away three months ago.
    5. I love spending time with my friends.

Keith Boykin: Well, thank you very much Orlando. And good luck.

    Orlando Jordan: Definitely Keith.
