Should we edit/use RPGM as the main game engine editor?

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT HALF THE RESPONSES IN THIS THREAD ARE THE TYPICAL RESPONSE YOU WOULD HEAR FROM ANY RUNESCAPE ADDICT WHO HAS NEVER SEEN A BOOK OR A REAL GAME IN THEIR LIFE. PLEASE, IF YOU ARE ON OF THESE PEOPLE, FIRSTLY GO DIE, AND THEN PROCEED TO EDUCATE YOURSELF IN THE WORLD OF FINE GAMING. THAT IS ALL.

I say we do this in a classic way. A lot of the ideas will take a strenuous amount of work to see any form of progress, and it'll only be a fraction of a percentage. If we do a classic style RPG, and turn it into an MMO, then we could have a game up in weeks, maybe a few months.

If any of you have heard of RPG Maker, it's a simple tool used for making single player application games. It has several built in graphics, sounds, items, etc... None of this is permanent, and it can all be edited. If we were to take this application, and make it edit it to be more of what we want, then we add a aspect of online play, it would be much easier than starting from scratch.

We can build on the engine, and alter what is already there. Then we can simply have it connect to the server when a person is ready to play, and instead of running in a browser, it runs on their computer. All the data would be stored in the databases, and only accessible through there. This would also allow for easy editing, fixing, and the like.

Simply put, the easiest, quickest, and probably best way to start out making a game like such.

Here are some screen shots I took of my work in progress... I didn't take any of the menus, but they look a lot like that of possible Final Fantasy, or even Shining Force... Very classic, but effective nonetheless...

Now what would have to be done, is some simple work on the engine to make it so we can edit various aspects. Event folders would have to be made so the switches for each new player can be altered. Different graphics may need submitted, as well as a possibility of full character color changing, editing, etc. Some work to the menus for changing, and several item and creature graphics changed. But as it stands... there's several animations, sounds, graphics, and more in this program...

There's also a script editor that comes with it, I'm pretty sure it's mostly in C, or possibly some PERL. But it's fairly simplistic.

    Well, agreed?

no, not agreed, we are using a system in our mmo that will let us switch from 1st person to 3rd person.

You understand the efforts that takes, correct?

I'm saying for a first version to expand.... No smart company jumps straight into virtual reality, they start simple and work on what they have.

First to third isn't very difficult. A few lines at best. It is merely adjusting the camera. A camera at a fixed angle and height or a camera at a variable angle and height.

It's not the camera that's the problem. It's the fact that you have to put A LOT more detail into graphics, whereas a 2d with a 3d effect is much easier, and actually cleaner than a 3d. Less mistakes are made, and usually allows for cleaner game play as well.

You do not know what you are talking about in any of these game sections..
Classic RPG's were the best ...
For instance when rsc was closed and rs2 came out I was pissed off..
Every play Final Fantasy or any other Classics...
You know nothing if you think all games are only good with GFX...
You have watched way to much G4TV...

I say no, this just wont give enough options etc. Sythe himself said he will pay professionals to develop a game.

Exactly. Games like final fantasy, secret of the stars, and others of the like dominated in their days. 3D graphics are more limited than these games were, not only because the files are much larger, cause lag, and usually piss players off, but because too much work goes into the design, and not enough into actual storylines.

For instance, WoW has pretty good graphics, but I haven't read one bit of the story line because it's all pretty boring.

Final fantasy had the best story line, but they had little block hands in 7, and before that they looked much like the character up there.

I say this layout would not only be the best, but it'd be the most original. There's no online games out there that use this kind of style, because all the users are idiots and think that graphics mean everything. Hello mcfly, it's the story, and the detail that matters. Not how many black spots are on a god damn building.

    Learn to game. Thank you.

Zelda?! The same Zelda that spawned several BILLIONS of dollars in profits?

No, I don't find that offensive at all. In fact... thank you.

You're right, classic games are no good at all... they're fantastic, and generally own the market ;)!

it's a good idea. RPG -> MMO could work, although I don't think RPG maker is the way to go...

Although i was fairly excited about the first player view :(

    btw XP owns VX ;)

VX is the newer version, and XP doesn't work on Vista.

Diablo 1 was 2d, better graphics, but it still was.

That can be developed, but if you start with a 2d engine, and slowly progress, you can achieve more than rushing to a 3d game. That way the actual game play can be perfected, and then graphics can be worked on.

Is that program capable of handling quests and back stories as such?
I don't think it should be the program used to create a release version of the game. Perhaps just to get all the ideas etc together.
