How To Free Up Several Gigabytes of Space On Your Computer!

So my C Drive was running out of space and my hard-drives are still coming over in packing from my last move, and I was frantically searching for something, anything to delete. Instead of deleting important files, I saw something awesome.

Welcome To My Twelfth Guide.

We're going to be using a handy thing called Disk Cleanup. What it does is delete everything that isn't used anymore on your computer, and saves you space at the same time.

Disk Cleanup is available on XP and Vista.

Go to Start, and then to Control Panel.



Also, just searching for Disk Cleanup in your search bar makes it come up easy.

From Control Panel, go to Performance Information And Tools:


On the left hand side of the screen, there will be a thing saying "Disk Cleanup". Click on it. You now have a choice.



I chose "My files only".


Windows XP has an extra tab with more things you can delete.

Be careful when clearing from important drives. Files such as error files can deleted. So can temporary internet files. It may be a nuisance to delete files such as Hibernation File Cleaner or things such as that. When you click on the thing you want to delete, but aren't sure whether you should, read the description given in the box. Here it my C Drive, and note I did this cleanup last night as well.


That is about 4GB of stuff deleted, that I would never even find useful. I'm on a laptop as well, so that is nowhere near as much as someone with a desktop would have. I hope this has helped you clear up some much needed space on your computer.

I would ask parents for initial set up and other programs you might need,if not call your Computer Manufacturer/Internet Provider.

My comp runs so fast now,and I can run programs I couldn't before.

 

Hibernation is like shutting down, but the computer takes a screenie of all applications and stuff, then when you boot up, it puts all that back up. I would keep it. I think. I don't really use Hibernation, but I'd keep it if you ever did get it.

 

If you don't want to do this many steps, there's a program called CCleaner. It clears away all of that in roughly 3 clicks, including the close button.

Lolz, I got told that I was being unoriginal because all of my earlier guides regarded downloading stuff. Therefore, most of my new guides work with things that are already on the computer, or not even regarding computers. <3

 

Yeah, this is nice because everything is built into the computer (assuming you accepted the "download Windows system components if you reinstalled your OS). The only thing is, there are programs out there that not only delete hard drive stuff but also defrag and/or fix registry errors in the same few clicks. Windows Disk Cleanup is a bit lacking when it compares to CCleaner or Tune-up Utilities. Still, nice and simple 9/10 for the guide, 3/10 for the program.
