[DENIED] Lock down new Discord accounts to channel where members are not listed

New discord accounts don't need access to anything that people in the server have access to (rules, news, etc.) and often times new accounts are only there to PM people from the server from impostor accounts since the entire member list shows to anyone. I am proposing creating a separate #rules channel for new members, copy paste the rules in there, and automatically give new joins the Unverified role and if they have Unverified then only let them in that channel, and anyone who doesn't have unverified can't see that channel. Also #faq

That way they can still see #rules but won't be able to access anyone else in the server, and will have to verify an account with Shinbot in order to use the member list.

The only con here is that people can easily register an account and look people up and go based off that, but to play off of that, at least they have to verify and use their real Sythe name in order to access member list

 

An issue was raised "How will @Chef man down in seconds eat?", this would not impact manually verified/alternatively verified accounts, you can verify any way staff will let you (usually Shinbot if not manual) but you have to verify in order to access member list.

 

sythe discord has shifted away from trading. its basically just a social platform now. if they still had active trading channels like before id support but as it is now, dont really see a point.

 

People aren't impersonating within the server itself, they are messaging people on the side, and Discord impostors are quite frequent on Sythe still and people are still impacted by it.

 

Support as I have personally had people try to imposter scam me as a member of sythe, and the fake discord had the sythe discord as a mutual server. It threw me off for a second and made me take a closer look, but for a new user, they may have fallen for it.

 

So your argument here is that people are using the sythe discord to impostor scam users so they don't have to friend them(making them realize there's two) so you want to hide the members list to prevent this?

Perhaps I'm missing something but how does this correlate? If you hide the members list Discord still considers them in the server - Are you telling me people are actually joining as bobXXX when bobXXx is the real one into the actual discord and scamming people?

I am trying to grasp how u expect this to actually work. Surely this cant contribute towards impostor scamming on more than a miniscule level by someone just being in a discord let alone with the trading channels gone?

To my knowledge Sythe and Shin cant control if a usergroup shows up as being in a shared server(which I imagine makes the impostor look more legit and makes it so they don't have to add friend the victim making the scam more obvious) - Is this not what this is trying to combat? I am trying to figure out how your solution what-so-ever combats this problem.

Just hiding the member list to users in this new "unverified" group u suggested wouldn't do anything - They'd still share the server and still not have to add people within the Sythe discord.

Or are you trying to prevent people from hopping into the sythe discord as a unverified member and being able to add people?

I really don't understand actually - What exactly are you trying to address and how does this impact it?

 

The point is people are impostoring other users by going into Discord and grabbing users names and adding them and messaging in another chat, if they can't see them in the member list then they can't do that

 

I don’t think you can remove the member’s list from any user that has decided to join the channel, but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong..
Would support if it’s possible.

 

The two issues I see with this are:

1. Some overhead would be required to handle permissions
2. Users can still be searched by their username and have their discrim show up to be contacted

However, for the second point, this would still cut back on non-verified attempting scammers because nobody is going to sit in Discord and look people up one by one, they are cherry picking online users now (presumably).

 

Not sure what you mean, but my last post might explain your question. I tested with someone and the members list is hidden from people not in channels with those members, it's sort of like Richard blocking @Butta from viewing the crypto channel on Discord, except this would be on the scale of all non-verified users.

 

Yes, that pretty much answered my question. I’ll support the implementation of this suggestion.

 

Problem is that it would still show "mutual" server which is one of the ways people get away with the impostor scam in the first place. Its fairly easy to prevent people from viewing a certain channel but i haven't been able to find a way to tie "new user account" to a certain role. (been trying to do the same in my discord where if a user has an account that's an x amount of days old they get a certain rank)

 

It wont stop anything, people list discords publicly on here and I don't think imposters usually do join the discord anyway since ShinBot welcomes the user.

In this case ( Basslayer impersonating Dieze ) , the impostor was in the discord under his real sythe name in order to find out who was online, the impostor account was not.

Regardless of user's being hidden, or not. There is always going to be scammers, and they will always find new ways. I don't really see how this would consistently stop them.
