The Large Hadron Collider: End of the world? Universe?

Many are skeptical that when this thing hits zero the world is going to end.
Apparently this particle accelerator has the potential to create a micro-black hole or "strange matter" that could destroy the earth.
The Large Hadron Collider is basically a 27km tunnel that freezes gases and smashes the atoms together, to find out what makes the world tick. Or so I've read about.
So do you believe this machine should resume their experiment which could potentially end the world?
Should they try to find out some scientific theories while taking the risk?
I'd like to hear some thoughts.
I'm personally sitting on the fence on this one. Because it's theories vs. theories and I can't tell for sure which will be right.

Basically, when they mash atoms at this magnitude it could create a black hole.
This could mean the world can be destroyed in a second, or in years, I've seen a few different statements on the time.

In worst case scenario, it COULD create a black hole, which COULD tear the entire planet apart. However, the chances of that happening is so insignificantly low that there's a bigger chance of our planet getting torn apart by a meteor tomorrow.

If a black hole was created it would evaporate/vanish almost instantly before it could consume mass around itself and grow.

Well, where does the black hole link to? I awlays ask myself this question.

I love blackholes. They are mysterious and make me <3 them. But I can't believe it possible. Smashing things together does not make them dissappear. Smashing things together breaks them. :)

The first law of thermodynamics states that matter cannot be created nor destroyed. And they don't smash 'things' together, they smash particles - matter - together with so much power that it will cause an implosion.

Particles can come under definition as "things". :) And an implosion means something has happened on the inside...right? So how can smashing "particles" together result in implosion if a force has had to crack open the shell of the particle in the first place? *if I've made some error of judgement, or said something completely, completely stupid and it makes no sense, I'm very tired. :\ *

The chances of us dying are so small, it's not going to happen.

By evaporate you mean by Hawkings radiation, which is also a theory which hasn't been proven.

hehe, I read "the large hardon collider"

    OT:
I don't really think it could bring the earth in danger. Why would they make such a device if they know it can destroy earth? It's an experiment on a very large scale, if they made a tiny black hole it would still not be the end, IMO. I think the worst case scenario would be that the device breaks down, tearing the area around it apart.

Truly, I just DO NOT see how this could happen, yes it is a theory but most don't really come out correctly... overall I think it is a load of crap!

I also highly doubt it would kill everything. Time and matter won't be destroyed but colliding hadrons.

Yeah, those masses of scientists with their extremely advanced education, millions upon millions of dollars and thousands of hours have nothing on your knowledge of "smashing things". What idiots eh.

Nearly everything to do with astrophysics is a 'theory that hasn't been proven'... Black holes themselves are theoretical. We have witnessed radiation from areas that we have theorized black holes to exist, it's the only way to balance the equations.

Congrats on the first referance to the 1st law of thermodynamics that does not involve religion...

Anyways, I'm no pyhsics major, but creating a machine capable of creating black hole with the potential power to destroy...everything, seems extremely unlikely if not impossible. Interesting none the less, I will read up on it.

No where, once something gets sucked into a black hole, it no longer exist.
