Raising Australia's Confectionery Alchole Price's Help Or Hinder The Situation?

EDIT: Mod please edit the thread name, I have miss spelled the word "alcohol"

Recently, the government raised the price's of confectionery alcohol in Australia, to stop under age drinker's from binge drinking. Was this a wise move? I think that it may have helped the problem, but not have fixed it. No matter what, there is now stopping underage drinkers from buying drinks. Regardless of what the price may be.

The other concern about this is, they may go to the street's in search of a substance far cheaper than alcohol, such as drugs.

What is your say on this? Does this help or cause more problems?

Why would it stop the problem. Didnt fix it either, underage drinkers such as myself also will never stop buying boos, just get an older bloke to do it. Whats the worst that can happen rofl, did it over 20 times now.

I will not stop anything, as you said yourself why pay 70 - 80 bucks for a carton or pre-mix when you can buy a bag of weed of ecstacy pill for 30 buck ? all they have done is make alcohol more expensive ( the better and healthier option of the 2 ) and Illegal drugs more cheaper in a way which will most likely temt Australian youth.
What the Australian government need to realise its not the price of alcohol its the way youth get it, and yes I know I'm 16, from Tasmania and I can walk strait into a bottle shop and buy anything.
What should have been done is what they did at some of the Tasmanian night clubs, ID scanning, while entering the bottle shop simply scan your ID to be let in or something along the lines of.
And let me say 1 thing... I dont agree with any of my ideas because I still need to buy alco :)

The main problem here is that now people are buying straight drinks since they are cheaper but that means theres more risk of someone getting extremely drunk etc. Also they are then mixing themselves which we all know doesn't usually work out too well.

    Thanks :)

Also apparently they are now talking about raising the price of straight drinks to combat this problem. Which is causing anger among lots of people for the obvious reasons.

    1. It looks like a marketing technique purely to make more money rather than to actually stop binge drinking.

    2. People are wondering whether the government are trying to make alcohol illegal.

    3. They are just back to where they started except then we'd have to fork out a lot more money for alcohol.

But yeah i only heard from one person that they are gonna raise the prices on the rest of the types of alcohol so i am not too sure on the reliability of that statement.

    1. This ban encourages kids to drink more spirits, making it do more bad than good.

    2. I thought it was pretty much proven that the tax is simply increasing the already huge surplus?

It's stupid how they resort to raising the prices. What about people mature enough to drink responsibly for enjoyment? They've pulled the same stunt in my country, but only with cigarrettes. To make kids stay away from them. I don't smoke and I don't plan ever beginning, but I find it incredibly unfair for all smokers who now has to pay more.

It's mainly underage drinking, because people can't control their habbits ..
Like under 18 year olds.. and because of them and the fights they cause at clubs, their planning on making the age 21.. Fuck they are sad ..

I think this is just another example of politicians using a problem in society as an excuse to make money.

If they wanted to fix the problem they should make harder punishment for buying for kids, withdraw permissions from stores that sell to underage customers, etc.

Only under age kids drink pre mixed drinks. this doesnt affect me since i drink mostly beer, at home i usually have scotch, but i buy a bottle of it not pre mixed.

It does stop the ALOT. you wont see under 18s drinking beer cos there too soft, and the effort in carrying a bottle of coke and a bottle of bundy, then carrying cups around, its to much effort.

Also i beleive this was aimed mainly at alcohol related violence. I think there should be a bigger punishment for violence and not making alcohol cost more.

It will effect how much money you have, $4 for ONE can of woodstock, $75 for a carton, now thats bullshit. Theres no way anyone in there right mind would pay that. oh and its 30 somethin dollars for 4 woodstock blues lol.

Where as i spend $36 on a carton of tooheys extra dry.

either you drink beer, buy the bottles of spirits, or your a fool :p

Is it true that the government are lowering the price of pre-mixed drink's, to weigh out the average between beer as well? Or was that just some rumor I heard.

I don't intend on drinking too much alcohol when I'm older, so it doesn't apply to me ;)

To be honest, raised prices will only briefly annoy the teens, because they now have to hand over more cash.
