You say you want to develop apps and and software. This was the mistake I made. This is exactly what interested me and I thought computer science was the program for this. It's not. You should look for software engineering programs, otherwise in computer science you will have to take a lot of theory based courses which most likely won't interest you. Does your school have a software engineering program?

For appealing, I imagine your school has multiple board meetings where they determine what appeals to grant. If I remember correctly, I don't think my appeal was even looked at until August. Is there a reason you want to retake the entire year? Did you get any credits yet?

software engineering? That sounds a lot like a more hardware based thing. Right now I do a ton of theory and mathematics but it's balanced somewhat. Software engineering is a bit more specific i'd assume? Are you sure it's programming?

also I want to retake the entire year because I want a clean slate. Plus I want to stay busy and why not do both whilst improving my grade from last year. I wonder if the appeal would be accepted

Yeah have a job offer for when I graduate. Nothing to do with my China trip though. And I'm going into a completely different field to you.

My basic advice to you: stick with uni.

i appreciate your response man. we have different fields but the logic is what i appreciate. it makes sense to stick with uni, so does taking a risk but i'm not so ready yet. thank you man

Youtube or google "computer science vs software engineering", it might help you understand the differences. In the end, they are both pretty similar, but I think you would lean more towards software engineering.

Yeah i searched up a few videos, I guess they are the same but different in a way. I don't know much about electrical engineering but I am more comfortable doing mathematics and stuff. I think the CS route is the one i'll be taking but tyvm

Electrical engineering is much different than software engineering. In computer science you are more likely to have to take courses where you design circuits. What are some jobs you would want to get after graduating? Working for an app development company? Creating websites?

yes those types of jobs. creating apps, websites, and generally any software related development. i looked at some software engineering courses and the units covered are mainly the same as cs but instead of the mathematical and logic theory it covers electrical engineering which seems off putting. sounds kind of confusing, but the output is the same right? both lead to a software developer i think

With software engineering, you will most likely do a lot more practical projects, like maybe developing an app or program in a group setting. If you get a job you will almost always be working in a large team. Software engineering will prepare you for this team setting, like how to collaborate with other developers on a large project.

I think it may be too late now though to change. When I was getting into this course I accepted the unconditional offer I got because it was easier and the safer choice instead of having to grind without a guarantee. Got into a decent uni too.

because SE and CS are so similar is it even possible to change from one to the other? or do they still have to check things.

Generally programming whether it's with a team, or alone is fine by me. Might go freelance or might go corporate, i'm not sure but i'll see down the road. At this particular time I do enjoy the balance of mathematics and logic theory that CS provides. It keeps my brain active and i'm not sure that electrical engineering topics will since they are more specific to engineering only. tough decisions

Electrical engineering is not the same as software engineering. It is probably just an elective. Switching programs is probably easier then you think. My first year of university I failed I think 7 or 8 of my 10 classes because I skipped all exams (didn't know you could drop courses and save money lol). At the time I was doing a business degree but I realized I didn't like it. One of the classes I took as an elective was a python programming class which interested me, so at the end of the year I just walked to the dean of computer science and asked if I could switch to computer science program because it interested me.

It is nice that you like mathematics and logic theory, but at the end of the day this stuff probably won't help you much in the long run if you want to do stuff like develop apps, websites, etc. After you graduate you would most likely have to learn software engineering concepts. To be honest if I had to do it again I probably wouldn't even do university. This field is something that is easily self-taught. At the end of the day, in this field, your actions speak louder than a degree. If you have a portfolio with successful apps/websites/software you already developed, an employer would probably be more interested in you over someone fresh out of university with no experience. I think @Andy Samberg graduated from computer science too maybe he could give his input.

keen on hearing his input. Also I never knew you could drop classes to save money? whaaattt that's insane.

As much as I want to drop out and self learn programming, i need the environment and the student finance loans i'm provided with so I'm going to carry on but maybe on the side create and work towards my own projects so i can simultaneously build a portfolio along with my degree.

also another question along those lines but how likely is one on landing a job after the degree in any country. I'm thinking of going to America and living there post-degree, and if that is something in my realm of possibilities.

I live in Canada. I assume in America it wouldn't be that hard to get a job. Even lots of students are hired while in university. And I guess it depends on the school, but I think most schools you would save money if you drop the class by a certain date. At my school I think you could get a full refund if you drop within the first 2 weeks. I think the latest you could drop is 2 months in and you would get 50% back.

Canada! that sounds amazing. I've been thinking about going there also, it looks like an amazing place to live. Honestly i'll probably end up there, I really want to go to it.

I assume you cannot get a refund if you're not paying for the courses yourself but funded by SFE? Also you get less credit right?

You would have to check with your school. Is SFE a student loan? If it's a loan they should still refund you like normal. Refund policies are probably very different from school to school so you would have to check. Does your school have an "important dates schedule"? That is usually where it gives the drop dates.

Aiiii you're the one that got hit hard, very hard lol.

@OP if you're sticking in school, which is what I read, you better kick ass. If you don't, you better start working. Get an easy job so you can focus on paying everything off and then start moving your way up in the workforce.

I for example am in the medical field and it requires a degree. There are many jobs you can get in the healthcare field that do NOT require a degree, however I am not doing this for money - I am doing this because I love it.

My mind is getting clearer by the day, just have to get up and build an ideal environment to study and practice programming and stuff now so i am comfortable and happy! tyvm bro

you're right absolutely. Though I'd like to stay at home and learn it myself, I can't due to circumstances but it's fine. I'll have to work harder at university and do better, this is the route I am going to take. I really do love computer science and it may seem like I don't from my first year and since i've been given the opportunity to redo the year, i'll prove otherwise. I just have to get my mind prepped for this, I appreciate any help along the way

What country are you from? Self - taught computer science is a gift, and sometimes it may pay off very well.
