Final Cut Pro, AVID, and arguably Adobe Premiere Pro are the best (not to mention the industry standard). All that other stuff like Sony Vegas and Camtasia are geared toward more amateur filmmaking.

/fail. If you're looking for the "Best" movie editor ever, Sony Vegas definitely does not even come close to qualifying.

Adobe Premier Pro is pretty good.

If you're into crazy special effects and have 100 hours or more to learn, Maya can be a good tool, though it isn't really for editing.

Lol. Maya actually isn't that hard to lean. But then again, I took a class for it. I dunno how far you'd get learning it yourself.
Anyways, Maya is more for 3d animation, not special effects. Shake and After Effects (and Combustion, but I think it might be discontinued) are programs that are specifically designed for special effects in terms of putting everything together (compositing) and adding effects on to already created footage (while 3d programs like Maya create the footage). Of course, many high end productions use a 3d program such as Maya to create a 3d environment, then insert chroma-keyed footage and composite them together in Shake/AE.

And yeah, Premiere Pro is decent, but AVID and Final Cut Pro are much better.

I rendered a 3d animation of a person doing crazy backflips n shit once (it looked like crap but it was funny) and put it in a video making fun of the matrix.. used as special effects.

Ugh... you're not really getting the point. Yes. that can be considered a "special effect", albeit, very loosely. Most professionals that do 3d animation wouldn't call a character modeled in 3d doing backflips a "special effect" they'd just call it 3d animation. However, in films like 300, when the 3d elements are added into the film such as the elephant, using a compositing program, would qualify as an example of "special effects."

Actually, Adobe Premier and Adobe After Effects are the best..but good luck getting those. (I had a year in training for both but I don't have the programs)

I use Camtasia and Sony Vegas - Sony Vegas will take a while to get used to.

Actually Adobe Premier and After Effects are not the best. I've use both on my laptop and (although I enjoy using After Effects and consider myself proficient), Apple Shake (in conjunction with Motion) and Final Cut Pro are undoubtedly better. In my personal experience, the UI in Final Cut Pro is easier to get used to, and it can handle larger video files with less lag.

And as I stated earlier, if you go to any major movie studio, they use AVID and Final Cut Pro to edit their footage almost exclusively. All they really use Premiere for nowadays is just to capture footage.

I have never used Final Cut Pro so maybe your right.

According to PC Magz. Both got a 4.5/5 (Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, and Apple Final Cut Studio 2)
    I had CS2.
