Copyright Infringement and Intellectual Property

Firstly my opinion is simply that no matter what happens, we will always have piracy, in one form or another, and that we cannot avoid it. My opinions align quite strongly with those of the FSF and open source media, like Wikipedia and GNU/Linux. Non-profit organizations, etc.

With "intellectual property" debates on the rise, coupled with the mass hysteria created by the RIAA and the most recent wave of the DMCA law revision (in the south, yes) there is still many, many "infringements" still going on.

Do you agree or disagree with the methods employed by the RIAA and the IFPI?

What are your general opinions on the issue, and in your belief "the best course of action"?

 

I believe everyone has rights to their information, they should just share it for free...

 

Intellectual property is just getting silly, I had to shut down my old RS cheating site after Jagex threatened to file a suit over intellectual property... it's an easy law to be abused by corporations that have enough time and money.

Your right that piracy won't be stopped, I've noticed some corporations have taken the liberty of almost encouraging it... for example, south park can now be watched on official comedy central sites. To me this shows that they realize they can't stop piracy so instead they've used it to draw additional traffic to their site. Other companies need to get with the program and start evolving to keep up with the technology.

 

All of you are right, piracy wont stop. But intellectual property is the property of the owner alone. You see, the laws around this are very fiscal and are not very specific. So, as long as there are these loose laws, piracy and stealing of intellectual property will always exist.

 

Adobe has it right, they target piracy by careful marketing, the way adobe sees it is this:

-Smalltime designers and beginners illegally download photoshop
-these designers get good with this program and even become experts
-these designers get hired by a company
-the company is forced to buy the products from adobe as a company cannot be caught stealing software or they'd be sued for alot.
-adobe makes its money from this pirated software.

ever wonder why it's so easy to keygen the products? that's why.

of course, not every company can do this, but alot of companies could employ similar tactics.

 

Yes but, you see this actually shows something about today's piracy prevention. There really is none, you see companies use that piracy (like you said TDD) to make the money. But also, you must see that this then "Demotes" piracy because

A. If they are found with stolen software they will be legally charged.

B. If they do not pay up the company they WORK FOR will be legally charged with possession of stolen property.

So all in all, companies do this because, yes it is good profits, but it can also make piracy go down a little.

 

I don't think companies have approached it in the right way at all. Everyone here has said that piracy isn't going to stop, and they're right. Information related companies just don't seem to realize that.

You know for like the last 50 years the biggest musical mistake ever was the record exec who refused to sign the Beatles? Well, they're now saying that was only the 2nd worst. The 1st is the way record companies have dealt with Napster and other file sharing sites. Instead of embracing and capitalizing on internet file sharing, they tried to fight it tooth and nail.

And failed.

And lost millions upon millions of dollars.


Ughster is right. They need to start working with it instead of trying to fight the masses who are using it...or else they're gonna be screwed.
