Thanks now I won't have to match the background color of my image with the background color I'm putting it in front of.

Well, kidding because I already know this but yes it is good for the new people and/or those with brain deficiencies.

I actually met someone today, who was saving their sigs in .jpg format, and wondering why they couldn't get a transparent bg.

Actually, GIF is smaller file. PNG is used because it can support semi-transparency... while gif pixels have either a 0% or 100% opacity. And GIFs only have a 255 color palette.
So you'll want to use GIF when you have <= 255 colors and/or when you don't need semi-transparency... which isn't often when making things such as signatures. But GIFs are nice for webpage layouts and such.
    cheers

    Transparent Backgrounds a How To

    Here's every fuckup you made:

PNG and GIF are completely different in every way, PNG transparency is ALPHA transparency, whereas GIF transparency is BINARY transparency. Alpha transparency allows each pixel to have a seperate alpha value to change each pixel's opacity whereas binary transparency has one color dedicated to be transparent, and everything with that color is completely transparent, so you have either transparent, or not transparent (on or off - binary!).

PNG is NOT a ripoff of gif, they're completely different file formats in every way.

The PNG does have a background, but it is speicfied that it's opacity is 0, so it is not visable. and it is easy to have a PNG with a larger filesize then JPEG.

    all in all, you fail.

    Transparent Backgrounds a How To

Hmm, sorry but TDD is right.

if you have a canvas of 500x500 and your image is, lets say, 100x100 pixels. The other 400x400 is transparency. You then save the image as a png, then upload it. The image you upload it will not just delete the transparent pixels, so therefore your 100x100 image will be there, but totally off center as no one can see the the 400x400 transparent pixels.

Also, they are completely different formats like he said. You would know this i you did any Flash work with transparency. A image that you import will be a whole uneditable image until you trace it (Separate it pixel by pixel, flash does it for you). That uneditable image, if you set the transparency or ALPHA as it is called in flash, to any other level besides 100, the whole image will fade. While if you have a vector image, and highlight a selection of pixels, then change the alpha, only those pixels will change.

png is not ripoff of gif.
