I just think it's a fascinating read, and just flick open any page and you get a page long explanation, sometimes it's even two pages. If any of these 'chapter' titles seem confusing or misleading, I could post a copy of the chapter. (They're half a page tall (landscape A4))

"Soya sauce, a fermented sauce made from soybeans, roasted grain, water and salt." from Wikipedia.
In my (possibly completely incorrect) opinion, soya sauce is made of soy beans and is used to make things taste saltier. I think it's frequently used in Asian food. Please correct me if I'm wrong. ;)

if all the good food was gone 2000 years ago then whats the point of bitching about it? No one you know, or can even trace, was alive then. It's like saying "The dodo bird died 2000 years ago. Damnit! Mabey if I was alive then we could stop this shithole of a world."

    Lol @ xsafire
    directly from the book:

In the times of Ancient Greece and Rome, the food that every gourmet wanted was silpihum from Cyrene, in what is now Libya. It was probably a member of the carrot family, slightly similar to the plany Ferula assa-foetida, prized today in Iran and India. People ate silphium leaves and stems like cabbage, or added it to sauces for its remarkable medicinal qualities, able to cure anything from flatulence to high fever.

    Teh ancient 'super-food'...

hehe, that was frightening when I first read it too. I was thinking "OMFG! Teh cows shall overpower us! Noes!" Then it included some boring stuff about stem cells and it said in the distant future "OMG safe..."

btw, 89 and 48 are quotes by people John Farndon mentioned. 89. is by Dennis Avery, oh, and by the way, he wrote a book called "Saving the World with pesticides and plastic". 48 is by Morgan Spurlock. The guy who had the idea about super-size me. You know, the film where the man is really fit, then he eats McDonald's for a month (as part of a test), and the doctors tell him to stop it because he's in a critical situation at the end of the first week. By the time the month ends, he's OBESE! And then it takes nearly a year to get in shape again ;)
