    Just or Unjust?

Harvard University, one of the premier universities in the US, has started making accommodations to suit a very small minority of it's student body. These actions include Hindu/Muslim pray locations, changing times of exams to suit their religious holidays, and making female only gym hours because of a few select Muslim women feeling uncomfortable being among men while working out.

I pose the question, why is the minority catered to any differently than the majority? I presume the majority would be Christian, or one of it's branches, or atheist. Why don't they have Christian pray times? Why don't they build churches on the campus? It seems ridiculous to me to cater so much to such a small group of people, who in all are highly unaffected.

Why do the women get their own time? Because they feel uncomfortable? Then why not segregate society upon gender due to a fraction of the populous feeling uncomfortable around the opposite sex. I find it hilarious how idiotic the "best school" in the US can be...

Ideas and comments? No flamming please, I pose no opposition to any of the mentioned or any other religions, just making specific benefits for them.

I agree - religion shouldn't be brought into educational facilities at all, to be honest, unless the school/institution is solely based on religion, like a Catholic or Islamic private school.

Exactly, all of this debate around the validity of separation of church and state, it seems ironic to me to have the idea of separation of church and state be nulled, especially from such a "prominent" law school.

If religion is to be separated from such facilities, then the entire academic calendar must be reworked, for many Universities base theirs upon having the Christmas holidays be the middle of the year.

If it is indeed Christmas Holiday and that is the sole reason for the break, then why is it called " Winter Break"? Perhaps because it has moved away from being a Jewish(Hanukkah)/ Christian(Christmas) based vacation and turned into nothing more than a vacation....

As Christmas break is celebrated by people other than those of it's intended religion, it can no longer be called a religious holiday. The pray centers for the Muslims and Hindu's solely benefit those people of their respective religion. A Christian or atheist gets no benefit from these pray centers; again catering to the minority.

I wouldn't say it's unjust granted that people are accommodating for ALL religions regardless of the amount of people practicing the religion at said institution, however I wouldn't say that the institution is morally obliged to accommodate.

    I Strongly DisAgree with You.

Reason Being Is Does one really have to choose between religion and Education. Does One need to DisObey ''God'' In Order to get a good education.

    Props To Harvard For This

If people from different religions feel uncomfterable attending different classes, then they dont have to go to that certain school. Since someone is willing to pay ALOT of money for a school like that, im sure for the same money or less they could find a school that DOES have that. Harvard should not need to change its years of traditions etc.

    You make absolutely no sense....

No you don't have to be religious to get a good education. You just proved my point...

Xtern-"i think its good. why shouldnt we suit other peoples needs?"

Due to the law of separation of church and state. The state (Harvard) is providing for two specific religions, the two being Hinduism and Islam. The state has no right meddling around with religion. It's sole purpose is to educate, not to cater to religious interests.

It can also be viewed as a form of favoritism. The college is specifically catering the the religion of Islam and the religion of Hinduism. I see no churches being built, nor any monuments resembling prominent figures in other religions.

A few reasons why its immoral and theoretically illegal.

Why not make a special time in the gym for out of shape people because they feel uncomfortable around fit people.

I also agree no school should cater to certain religion unless it's build for that main purpose. ex, Catholic schools.

Religion shoudn't have to do with anything, most religions are just people choosing to follow some random book that doesn't even make any sense. Our society should be purely secular.

People make their own decisions whether or not their lives and sequential social surroundings are secular. Harvard is the one at fault for attempting to bring religion into an educational center.

    You Fail Honestly>

    What is Annoying You.

The fact that they dont cater for christians catholics? They give you Saturday And Sunday Off To do whatever you want.

Muslims Holy Day is Friday A School Day.

They need to perform prayer at around 12pm. I dont think they have time to go to a mosque and prayt here before Class Starts.

If Your Saying America Is Only Catering For Islam/Hinduism Your Wrong.

They Give you 2 full days to do whatever the fuck you want.

If they Built a church what the fuck would be the point. Theres no school on Sunday.

    I rest My Case

Have you ever heard of majority rules, minority rights? This is a great example where a leftist institution reverses the order. The majority of the people are not Muslim or Hindu, yet they cater to their needs preferentially.

Who says I only go to church on Sunday if I'm a Catholic/ Christian? You clearly have no knowledge on the subject. Sunday is nothing but the sabbath day, AKA the day of rest. This is the typical day that most go to church. Yet, I know a number of people who attend church in the week, some even daily. So yes, a church would have a point...

Instead of saying "zomg dude, you failzorz", say something that makes you look like you have some intelligence, rather than just ranting. Realize the facts and then debate correctly.

If a Muslim needs to pray at specific times, then why make the College pay for such requests. Seems rather selfish to me, making a private institution pray for your religious requirements. They also have 5 pray times a day, not just 1. That means that they would have to interrupt class 5 times a day, highly impractical for group learning of any sort.

Personally I find this ridiculous. If they really wanted to cater to minorities, why not also give the Scientologists time for their religion? Or how about Buddhists? They just want to appeal to Muslims. Nice job Harvard, just proving once more how much of a left-wing organization you are...

My opinion has always stayed the same; Religion and religious views should never be brought near Education (unless of course this is a religious facility eg. catholic school, then by all means do what you want). But for public schools, why bring one and like you stated if it is for the minority? Not like I would agree even if religion and churches/pray times etc was brought in for the majority.

Just completely leave it out and get on with the education. If they want to pray, let them pray and miss school.
