Want to learn...

I really want to learn color functions and how they work. I've read some tutorials on them, didn't really help though, oh and I want to understand how they work with variables and stuff, it just won’t click into my head, if you would help me that would be great. I want to make something simple like hunting at the falcon place catching kebbit's then dropping the fur.
