    Cost to Build a Website

About how much would you say is a decent price to charge for making a website. I have the ability to make a website(http://www.markizano.net/) and other people are telling me that they will pay me to make the website for them. I just have one tiny little deal with the pricing. I don't want to be too outrageous, but at the same time, I don't want to sell my services short, you know what I mean? Does anybody have any ideas on what would be suitable prices for creating a web site from scratch.

To be a little more specific:
Nothing special, maybe some javascript here and there and i'll need a bitmap editor tht's better than mspaint to create decent images (which i'll get later). Its intent is for a guy who owns a small business and wants to expand a little.

    Ideas already compiled:
    - Charging $X per page + $X for updates.
    - Completing the project to negotiate a decent price, then charging for it, then posting it
    - Reserved for more ideas (will edit & add)

    Thx in advance,
    Markizano

before you even THINK about charging for websites, you need to learn proper markup, proper design, proper EVERYTHING. You have to learn about Web Standards, Typography in web design, image placement, color contrast, etc.

Ok, how's this, absoltuely nothing, for work like that, you shouldn't be charging a cent, or even making websites commercially.

I think the cost would change depending on the functions

A static page is valueless i think.

Yes, I did. But a friend of mine will pay me to make a website for him. I don't plan to do this commercially - just privately. I was just looking for some suggestions to point me in the right direction as to whether I should charge something like $50/page or negotiate a price after planning the website and determining what will be necessary for it. As a programmer, what would you charge? <- The real question of this post.

It depends on what you're programming for the site.

I think he's referring to HTML Markup as programming, not actual programming like perl or php or anything.

for a site like yours, you should be doing it for free, $50 is WAY too much for something as simple as that, and if you do actually code him a site, i can assure you it will have to many flaws it won't be funny, yours alone is so broken in so many ways.

if you learned how to properly markup HTML and CSS, alone you could charge into the hundreds for websites if you wanted, then learning PHP/JavaScript you can even start going into the thousands for huge businesses that don't give a crap how much it costs, but with your knowledge for HTML/CSS/Web Standards/Web Design, you should be charging at the MOST - a chuppa chupp. yes, that's right, no money, only a chuppa chupp. But of all the web designers i know, they all charge based on the number of pages, very few designers will charge by the hour if they're freelance, if you work for a company you'd be getting an hourly rate, but for freelance it's charged by the project/page.

Yea that looks like a project for middle school computers class.

If I were you I'd just go look for a free css template, and just remake the pages you have... but of course you can't sell that to anyone.
