Disallow adverting discord ID's on sythe

It's an interesting problem, the issue is discord is such a big trading platform now that if Sythe does away with it, will that reduce traffic to the site? People might use discord directly or go to other forums.

The other issue is that we have a sythe discord which would be rather hypocritical to ban discord from the site while having a official server.

Are the scams happening outweighing the benefit of discord being used as a trading platform? Currently I'd say no because there's only been a few reports.

It's a tough one, I will remain neutral for now I think.

 

Sythe font is different from Discord font. An entire platform shouldn't be blocked because of a few people that are incapable of reading Discord tags.

 

Actually its a worse problem than u think - I commented on the report on you and sent a private post directly to staff warning them.

If my id is topdog77#5853, and my fake impostors ID is Topdog77#5853, naturally in the English language u capitalize the first letter of a name - So I used to always type my discord as Topdog77#5853 in PM's because u are taught from 1st grade in the USA to capitalize the first letter of a name.

U see though now that's being used against traders, the first letter seems to be the biggest problem for most people sending PM's because we naturally capitalize the first letter of things.

So if ur discord was milo#5555 and someone requested a PM from u and u naturally typed it as Milo#5555, you've got a problem now.

Its a nuisance and I'm awaiting sythe staff to see how their going to handle it because it is a problem.

 

We cant force people not to trade via certain platforms. We are firm believers in a free market here on Sythe and that would hurt trading and the user base who majorly uses Discord for their trading needs.

The best we can do is warn them as much as possible about scam methods. We can only hold the community's hand so much!

 

I wouldn't make such a stupid mistake as typoing my Discord though, knowing full well imposters exist. I saw your post before you deleted it. If you typo your Skype name, or anything, the responsibility falls on you.

 

The issue is, and correct me if I’m wrong, but the skype “Sythe” and “sythe” are the same thing. Usually everywhere, once a username is claimed a username with a capitalized version is not available as the username system doesn’t recognize capitals being different, that’s only for passwords. I feel it’s uncommon knowledge that this is a thing for discord IDs until recently

 

This is correct - capitalization in skype names does not matter, if I type my skype as Live:seekmatt52 or live:seekmatt52 - its the same skype.

If I search dunworrys skype with a capital L or lowercase it makes no difference as capitalization traditionally does not matter.

That's why u don't see capitalization scams on skype - impostors have to have a different letter/digit then the real one.

Discord has introduced a new type of online scamming basically.

 

Yeah, most places don't let you pick the same username as another person. Discord lets you choose whatever tag you like, and gives you random numbers at the end to differentiate you. You still have to have a different Discord ID, we can't pick the same one. This is just slightly more deceptive because i/l look the same on Discord.

Just be more careful and request a PM. People should be doing that anyways :S

Of course you can never be too careful. Honestly I think it’s kind of a bad thing for discord, but we should have a news post put out on the sythe discord linking to a sticky stating this. Awareness, because to be honest, I could have fallen for this if it was over a week or so ago. Not good

 

I see no difference in this suggestion to disallowing any other form of contact. It would be silly to disallow anyone to advertise their Skype ID because an impostor scammed someone... why do it for discord? If needed, create some new (or edit existing) stickies that mention impostors on Discord and to double-check who you're talking to.

People need to learn safe trading habits and that includes verifying who you are talking to.

What Mr. Tmoe said. Specifically “People need to learn safe trading habits and that includes verifying who you are talking to.” We can’t hold the hands of every market user as we have quite a lot of stickies highlighting the importance of safe trading habits.

We’re working on notifying users with regards to recent Discord nitro impostors.

 

This update is definitely dogshit and makes life a lot harder for some but this shouldn't mean we are disallowed to use discord. I primarily use discord because I prefer it.

This just proves how important getting a sythe pm to confirm is.

There are impostors with Skype too.

I can't support this as much as I dislike the new nitro changes.

 

Make a warning that discord ID is case sensitive and its solved

 

Voted no for the simple reason that this is no different to Skype imposters.
The market is plastered with "Always request a PM", it's not that difficult.
