A file hosting site... How would I get one going?

First off I want to say don't come here to flame or spam.

Alright. So I woke up this morning and I had the idea to start a file hosting site.

I know that I need a host and a domain already.

    But, I have many questions.

    1) Is there a certain type of hosting I need to purchase for it to be a 'file hosting' site.

    2) How much do you think it would cost to get a domain and host the site (also how much space or gb's should the site have)

    3) If there is a certain way I have to have the site set up to be a file hosting site what am I limited to having on it? Can I put some sort of forums or games section to the site along with the file hosting part?

    4) Can I allow for music hosting? Or is this against the law? (I've never seen a file hosting site with music hosting)

And if there's anything I missed let me know.

I also have many ideas for it that would make it stand out amongst other file hosting sites, as long as I'm capable of having them done.

    Thanks for any help!

It isn't a good idea to have a file hosting site, you would run out of bandwidth quick, almost everything that would be useful to upload would be illegal to upload, and you would need a good webhost and uploading script.

Oy. My internet lost connection right as I was replying.

What do you think would be a better idea for a site that would bring in a good amount of traffic that would bring me income? I am also going to get a good scripter... or buy a script... and I will be using a good host.

Start an image uploading site and run ads on it, that should bring you in some good money.

    www.1337image.com

Over 2k images uploaded atm, 66k ad zone views and 100 clicks. I've only made 12 dollars so far but my site isn't really set up just for the purpose of making money.

Why does everyone want a file hosting site? Is there some sort of glory behind owning one that I don't know about?

Not really, I just decided to start a image uploading site since I had a lot of extra hosting space.

    1. As long as your host supports PHP, and isn't against the rules to run a public hosting service, it is fine.
    2. Shouldn't take more than 1gb of storage, a site with many users uploading images does not take this much. But bandwidth may be up to 50 GB. Really depends on how you promote it and how many people uses it. Would cost average of $10-15 a month for hosting.
    3. You can do whatever you want with your hosting, whether running many forums at a time, file hosting, subdomain hosting.
    4. You can always host music as long as your host doesn't find out. Too much music is what makes a host take action.

Also, Will you be interested in buying http://imagerip.com for $100? Comes with a free month of hosting, and already has users going to the site. I can also get you 50% off any hosting package at http://precision-media.net if you're interested in buying the site.

Well I really like the whole unlimited and unmetered deal for 10 bucks a month at precision media. My whole plan was the fact that with 1and1 I didn't have to make a large payment at first, but the domain would be 2 dollars a month and hosting for 10 dollars a month, which means the domain wouldn't be too much. I will think about imagerip.com, but I like the idea of not having to pay any amoutn of money up front. Thanks so much.

Well, domains are actually paid annually, or yearly, for $10, or $15 from Precision Media. I can lease you imagerip.com for $10 a month until you pay $100, that would be fine too.

So a year of a domain would cost $10 a year, and UNLIMITED hosting would cost $10 a month, it would only cost around $12 a month to run a file hosting site!

Well I managed to get about 80 dollars together right now, so I could pay all of that up front if that made you feel more locked into the year contract, you know? And yes, I'd definately like the deal with precision media because I've heard it's good. I look forward to dealing with you =D PM me please, I don't want to get yelled at for spamming to get my post count up. (Well I'd actually like to request that my post count doesn't go up in any part of the forum :p)

Precision Media is really good hosting. I don't use them anymore, but when I used to they had good prices, and good support.

Thanks for the heads up =D I'm happy I got a chance to work with them, and such an excellent offer. I'm very happy to start this. I've got large amount of friends that are going to advertise the site on myspace, and I've got three friends in fairly large local bands that are going to advertise it.

Are you going to just do image uploading or any type of files?

I'm probably going to make it so that you can upload images without an account, but if you make an account you can upload anything. I'm going to have much more added that just uploading, and I'll be looking for staff.
