No investment required, just a fun little project (although if you like collecting rare goodies, look into the Genesis Mooncats). But I suggest you rescue some before there are none left to find.

It's really easy too. People can even scan for them on their phones while at work/out and transfer them to a wallet via the seed. No need to even be connected to a node.

Rescue the mooncats before it's too late...!

The first 1,500 cats have safely landed on the ethereum blockchain to live a quiet, blissful life for eternity.

Here's a comprehensive guide written by the dev on what you need to know before getting started on your rescue journey.

    Welcome to MoonCatRescue!

Here is a quick guide on how to use the MoonCatRescue smart contract.

How to rescue MoonCats with MetaMask:

1.) Install the Chrome web browser and download the extension MetaMask.

2.) Create a MetaMask account and fund it with some ether. You can do this through MetaMask by clicking the "buy" button, or by sending some ether to the MetaMask address.

With MetaMask setup and ether in your account, visit MoonCatRescue.com.

3.) Click the "Find Cats" tab. Then choose how many CPU cores you want to use to scan for MoonCats. We suggest 1 less than maximum, so that your CPU can still handle other tasks. You can also do a more casual scan with less cores if you please.

4.) Click "Scan for Cats" to being your search. Your computer will generate seeds until it finds a valid seed for an available MoonCat.

The found MoonCat will display on your screen, and you will have the option to leave it or rescue it. If you choose to leave it, you can then search for another MoonCat. If you choose to rescue it you will be prompted by MetaMask to pay the associated gas cost (around $0.50). Then wait for the transaction to be published to the blockchain, and voila you are a new MoonCat owner.

How to rescue a MoonCat manually:

We recommend that you rescue MoonCats with MetaMask, but you can still scan for MoonCats manually. When you find a MoonCat, copy down the seed. Then you can take the seed and submit it to the contract via the rescueCat method. An easy way to do this is through MyEtherWallet (MEW).

1.) From MEW's homepage, click on the "contracts" tab. You will then have to copy and paste in the contract address in one box and the contract ABI in another box. The contract address is: 0x60cd862c9C687A9dE49aecdC3A99b74A4fc54aB6. The contract ABI can be found on etherscan.

2.) After copying in the contract address and ABI, click the "Access" button. Then click the "Select a function" drop-down menu under the "Read / Write Contract" section. Select the rescueCat function and copy in your seed.

3.) Then select the adress that you want the MoonCat to be rescued to, and click on the "Write" button.

4.) In the "Warning!" box that pops up check that the "Amount to Send" is 0 and that the "Gas Limit" is reasonable, around 100,000. If you are rescuing manually, then it is possible that someone else submitted the same seed in between the time you generated it and tried to submit it. If this is the case your gas limit may be raised to an unreasonable amount and your transaction will not go through. Be careful when rescuing manually that you check how much you are paying in gas costs. It should be less than a dollar.

    The Adoption Center:

You can visit your MoonCats in the Adoption Center. There you can name them, put them up for adoption, give them away, or request someone else's MoonCat to adopt.

Names are permanent. Be careful when choosing a name because it will last forever!

Requesting another MoonCat will put your ether (equal to the request price) into escrow. You can cancel your request anytime before it is accepted. Also, your request will be cancelled if someone else makes a request with a higher price.
