I was offered $7500 more annually to join a fast growing engineering firm this week. They also are offering benefits that outweigh what I currently receive.

Normally it would be a no brainer, but they asked me to begin this week. I fully intended to give at least one week notice. He told me he knows it was unethical and I feel bad betraying the firm who basically put me on my feet with no notice at all. I feel uneasy about it.

I wouldnt let it put you down. You gotta do what you gotta do to survive and provide dor your family/self. Im sure if your firm was going bankrupt and needed to drop some people they wouldnt give you a notice before kicking you to the side.

There was a big reddit post I'll link you,
You do not have to give your employer 2 weeks notice. • r/personalfinance

If you'd like to list your current employer as a reference give them a one week notice and ask your future employer if they'd be alright with a one week wait just to settle your affairs.

If you let your new employer dictate everything from the get go you may have a harder time in the future representing yourself.

If you've signed a contract stating a given period of notice and you're looking for a good reference you should probably give that amount, otherwise giving a week's notice period should be fine.

This would be the first red flag to me. If they are willing to acknowledge and be ok with unethical behavior now, what might they try later? If they really can't wait a week for someone to come in that means there is probably poor management if they are at the point they have to scramble to find someone fast. I would highly recommend asking your question at The Workplace Stack Exchange

You put that spot on, exactly how I was feeling. Their excuse was that they were severely understaffed, which I see... (I ended up accepting the position and have been there a week.) Checking out that site now, thanks.

How has it been? Only risk with startups essentially is accelerated growth which ultimately leads to a downfall. Nonetheless, you'll have two firms on your resume now.

It's actually been great. They offer quarterly bonuses as well which average ~5000/annually, which wasn't explained to me before. Low stress environment and good people. It's not a start up it's a 30 yr old firm, they're just experiencing a lot of growth from merging with other smaller firms who can't handle the workload, and two brothers just moved out of state and that's why they had immediate positions available. But yeah, two listings on my resume now :)

Have you had any previous interactions with that company? i.e job trials, even work placements? worked previously with any of their staff team?
Also, are they a reputable company? might also be in your interests to speak to some members of their current employees (behind the bosses back) and see if theyre known to use employees for a short period of time then dumping them. hope it works out well regardless.
