    Java or Python?

Hi all, I'm new here and would like to start programming. I am looking to start with the easiest language first and build my way up to harder ones. I think I picked two easy ones, so now I am asking. Which is easier to learn?

There both easy, I think python might have simpler syntax but its worthless, java on the other hand is pretty good and is useful.

Java, it is also more useful, and as Fallen Soul said, it has a more simple syntax.

Definetley java for a variety of reasons. It has a great syntax and it utilizes a virtual machine, (a concept which I am very fond of).

Vicious, your list is very wrong.

Python is about the easiest language for someone to pickup if they have no experience in programming. It's syntax is easy and one of the main ideas with Python is there may be many ways to do something, but only one correct way(For each circumstance).

Also, compared to other high level languages, it's pretty much up in the clouds.

However, if you want to go into a job, Python isn't that widely used (Although it's used extensively by Google and is also used by NASA).

Another thing that is good about Python is that it doesn't try to enforce OOP on the programmer, where Java does. Which can be difficult to learn

I could give a very long list of why Python is better for the beginner, but it's all over the web. Also, I'm not a Python zealot, i realise Python isn't perfect - it's far from it, but from the beginners perspective it offers a lot more than most languages.

Also, the first language you learn isn't so important as long as you do learn it. After you've done that, picking up another ALGOL-descendant language becomes a task of just learning the languages quirks and how things are done in that language (Loops, data structures, etc)
