Well, since there are some people that don't like this band and they listen to something else, I would say they are the best Alternative Rock and Alternative Metal I have ever heard. The only Alternative Rock I like so far is System of a Down and Creed.

 

Greatest band of all time? WTF.

The greatest bands of all time, thus meaning the "legends", are like Metallica, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, etc etc.

SOAD is nowhere near that in anyway, maybe for you it is the greatest or in the greatests....but IMO, SOAD is FAR in the "greatest" list.

And what puts Metallica, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and Iron Maiden the greatest? The fact that they're old, and the fact that they're pretty much mainstream?
Listen to every metal band in existence, then try and call those bands.

 

Probably because they have put incredibly much influence to todays music. I'd say Metallica, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Venom, Mayhem and Exodus are huge influences to the metal of today.

 

SOAD is awesome, my favorite band. Serj Tankian the lead singer, gave a pretty good solo album as well.

I must hate Nirvana. I just must. Their music is so.. lacking, in my opinion. It just lacks any particular luster. I do agree that bands such as Metallica, etc; were very influential to today's metal and they continue to be bands that produced great music, in my opinion. I just prefer System of a Down, and I agree with Jeebiaja that everyone should definitely listen to Serj Tankian's new solo debut "Elect the Dead", which is very basically a take on the Iraq war with well sung, if highly cynical lyrics. Even with its obvious bias, however, I just can't stop listening to it. Call it personal preference, call it what you will, I just find Serj Tankian's voice to be haunting and amazing, and in a way beautiful. Also, on a side note, in reply to xx mdv xxx's earlier post, I'm pretty damn sure System of a Down is not alternrock.. like, at all.

But that aside, the whole point of me making this thread was not to proclaim SoAD as the best band of all time. Like I said, I put them in MY top 5. (And I'll let you all know when my opinion matters to someone other than me).

What I DID NOT make this thread for and I absolutely despise, is people thrashing on other people's music, and I'm seeing it happening in trace amounts already.. if you think that negatively of a band, just say you don't like them and let that be the end of it.

Yeah SOAD do produce some good music, most of their older stuff is far better than their newer. They started sounding whinier as time went on, but they aren't producing any new music for a few years now, they band currently isn't together.

Just because they are influences doesn't make them the greatest, though.
In their respective genres, maybe. Pantera is definitely a pioneer of heavy metal, Mayhem I've got to say is the best black metal band ever, and Exodus and Metallica are good thrash bands, but I'm a SLAYER loyalist
There is no determining the greatest band ever unless you've heard every band in existence, and even then it's just your opinion, as I've said before.

I agree with walk on home a bit, I used to think they were so amazing, and so talented, and yes it is kind of true, yet they don't consider everything, they are producing their music without considering all of the possibilities. A lot of the values that they come up with I would agree with without thinking about it, and Serj is an activist so you cannot say they just rant about everything. However, they seem to think that the government is out to get you, sure it's fun to hate all that is powerful and controlling, and maybe people want to do something about it. But the fact remains that they aren't changing that writing deep amazing lyrical music about it.
I will always kind of like System of a Down, just considering the ideology of the band members and where they are going.
Becoming a System of a Down fan now? It is a little too late since they are going on a break, Just forget about becoming a fan.
