Spanish in America

Discuss whether or not you belive that Spanish will/or should be an official lanuage in the United States.

America has over 40 million spanish people residents in this country. Is that enough?

Why learn English fluentily when the first English explorers didn't learn any Native American Lanuages.

 

There are about 300 million US citizens.

40 million is about 13%.

No, I do not believe it should become or ever ever will become a secondary language of the US.

 

That's different. The mexicans aren't killing us for our land (yet), so they still have to learn english.

 

I personally doubt it will become a secondary language in America.

I do, however, feel, that due to there being such vast amounts of Spanish speaking people, it should indeed be considered carefully.

I definitely agree with the first.
They need to do it legally and learn the language that is spoken here.

&& about Germany... I'm from Germany and used to live there, ALL my family is over there...
In fucking GERMANY even, the children are REQUIRED to learn English.

Not Being Racist, But Im Sick Off These Asians/Indians Coming Here, Coming Into Work (Not Knowing How To Speak English) And Then Getting Shitty Because I Cant Help Them, It Pisses Me Off.

Good Point Viper, There Are So Many Asians Here That Come Here On A Visitors Visa And Live here, Its So Annoying, Why Cant They Just Apply For A Visa Its As Simple As That (Well Not Really) But You Get The Point.

As For Speaking Spanish In America, I Think You Guys Should just Stick To English Now 14 Million / 300 million Isn't Enough To Make It Important, If You Really Want To Speak It Speak It Only To People Who Know It.

 

I think it should be a Spanish speaking because it will attract more people to study and learn it.

Thats not even a viable response. Should we change the national language in Germany to Latin so more people can learn it?? Thats not even rational. A national language, by definition, is a language the represents the national identity as a whole. Does Spanish represent the majority of Americans? No, I think you may be confusing America with MEXICO.

Also, a national language doesn't just change. The basis on what decides the national language is not only population percentages, but historical association as well. Does America have an overwhelmingly Hispanic history? No, in fact the only mention of Spanish I remember in my high school U.S. History classes was the Alamo.. Which accounts for, I'd speculate, less than 1% of U.S. History entirely.

 

This land belong to Native Americans and Spanish before Englishmen took it over, and there was the spanish american war, also they were included in the civil war (stopping the confederates from reaching a goldmine to pay for there military). These are all things off the top of my head, I am sure I can find more information in which they effected our history...

What was the name of the country back then? Oh my.. It wasn't a country.. The English are responsible for colonizing, industrializing, and nationalizing what is now known as the United States of America.

Regardless of the spanish effects on American history, English is the national language for a reason.

 

How many Cherokee people remain? I don't even have to look for a figure, but I know the figure isn't as close to the number of spanish speaking residents, and nations characterisics are based off the people who win wars, you rarely hear the stories and remember the names of the hereos on the losing side. Also if so they are thought of as tyrants and barbarians.

Also I don't think it should be a second language, but this will be a harder topic to discuss in 50 years...

 

You can come into Germany, live here and get unemployment benefit without even speaking German. You can even do your driving lessons on turkish, WTF?
I think government should require immigrants to speak German, if they want to come here, or learn it within a few months.

 

I completely understand there are also benefits only available to people who are From Spanish origin, such as MediCare in California.

That is quite a small number compared to the rest of the people.

 

but population isn't the only thing that should be considered.

 

All I want to say is, it's lots of people from America and England here on Gran Canaria (Spanish island) and well seems like they expect everyone to know freaking English which is kinda annoying, no I'm not Spanish myself but at least I know how to speak the language

 

This happens quite alot, where ever we go we don't have to speak any other lanuage except English and we also we want others to learn our language? In china it is neccesay to gradute high school to be able to speak English and your language and 1 more fluentily in many schools, Many Indians can speak English. All aroung the world we are not excepted to learn anything.
