Should homework be banned from schools?

I have read this off a site, and this made me think. Time Magazine has an article on why homework is a bad thing for school kids. They cite Alfie Kohn whose work is a constant inspiration to many people.

Kohn’s claim is as stated: "There is not one single study that shows that homework helps kids learn. At the same time kids have less and less time to just be kids - time spent on homework has gone up 50% since 1981."

Your first thought might be, “But how could you have a school without homework” you’ll be glad to hear that the Sudbury Valley schools have been doing just fine without homework for 35 years now.

    Discuss your opinions.

Should homework be banned from schools?

I'll give you a simple explanation of why it IS good for kids-

Many times in your life you will need to do things which you don't want to do; tedious, repetitive, seemingly-useless tasks.. such as homework.. or paying your taxes..

I see where you're getting at. Did you know that for something to be a habit, it requires 22-26 days of practice? I have done homework for 8 years, (Not including pre-school, and kindergarden.) and I'm still bored with it.

Some subjects, such as math require "doing" to learn. Homework is "doing". Hence homework is learning.

Therefore, I can conclude that Homework=Good.

Adults are idiots here is my opinion:
    1. Teenagers have social life
    2. Teenagers have sport & sport training
    3. We do about 5 hours of school work through m-f

Honestly, as how much I hate homework, I wouldn't exactly want it to go away.

    1. It builds up your knowledge
    2. It occupies you
    3. It's just normal

    :):):)

Lol ok then reasons your an idiot for saying that:

    1. Who pays for your home?
    2. Who actually makes money from sports?
    3. You will be an adult in 10 years which means you will be an idiot going by your logic, your already there those gratz you beat the system.
    4. If Adults didn't work they would have no money which means they couldn't afford to go out and do more fun social activitys, Sitting on curbs really isn't cool once you can afford to go places.

Now thats over with homework although tedious is good practice as is doing anything that makes you think. Homework keeps you from becoming a fucktard like Sangan here he is a good example of someone who doesn't do homework or even goes to school?

It'd be more effective to just increase school hours and not give out homework. I think that's what should be done... but it's tough considering school would then cost more with the upping of teacher's hours/salarys.
But for colleges, this is impossible... but I assume we're not talking about that.

Should homework be banned from schools?

No, it shouldn't be banned. No, it's not good for the kids... Generally.
In some cases, homework DOES improve education. A good example of this is independent study programs*: About 5% of the time devoted to school is actually spent IN school, but I've seen them to be a perfectly legitimate form of education.
*For those who don't know what independent study is, it's when the student shows up at school ONLY to receive homework, is then given some arbitrary time in which to complete all assignments, and shows up at the next appointment to show the completed work (rinse and repeat.)

However, I still say it isn't good for the kids because homework USUALLY involves cramming for an impending test (boring and tedious, the upside presumably being retaining the information) and then forgetting everything after passing (so even if the information was important, it won't be retained.)

HOWEVER, banning homework would (in addition to preventing useful applications of it) not solve the underlying problem; it'd be like banning cupcakes to prevent obesity. If a school sucks to begin with, banning homework isn't going to magically make the classes better.

So what you guys are practically saying is studying is bad for children, so children shouldn't study.

I'm 13, I do homework, and I don't want it to go away. If there was no homework, there would be many more study hours instead. No study after school each day means you cram it all in at the last minute and you get a worse mark.

And as I said - Subjects such as Maths are doing subjects. You need to practically do them to learn. Homework is practical application of that subject, so doing your homework makes you good at the subject on a whole.

I think that homework is a necessity to reinforce what we learned. The one thing I hate is busy work, repetitive work of the same type like doing 50 of the same type of math problems instead of 30 or 20, crossword puzzles we are required to complete, etc
