    Computer help

Not sure if this is the right section, but i don't know where else to turn. Please let me know if i can put this in another section

So my in-laws gave me and my wife their old computer (it was bought brand new in 2010) and i was using it for a few weeks , but there was a million things downloaded, and 6 users so i wanted to get rid of it all.

I factory reset the computer, which took a few hours. The next morning i go in to turn it on and the computer turns on and the monitor turns on, then after about 15 seconds the monitor says "No input signal"

I've been looking up videos on youtube and ive done everything i've found on there but it still isnt working. i tried chatting with gateway and they wouldnt chat with me because it was out of warranty so they directed me to a third party site, that site wanted $199 to try to help me online.

Finally found someone that would help me for free and he says from what it sounds like he thinks its a hardware issue, i dont know much about computers but i know the computer was working 100% fine before i factory reset it.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you in advance!

If your tight on cash your local thrift store usually will have a bunch of underpriced hardware like dirt fucking cheap lol not always the best or working though. But for under $10 for almost anything you can't beat it.

You don't have to pay for help if your willing to work through it on your own. A lot of people on these forums and other places online can help you if you're patient.

It sounds like your video driver. You wiped out the drivers when you reset the computer. The screen shows initially when your turn it on because the BIOS uses a different driver than windows.

Try to run your computer in safe mode (google it if you don't know how) the display may show then. If not try connecting it to a different monitor. When you can get some display working you need to download the video driver from gateways website. Locate your laptop's model number and search on gateways website.

I highly doubt it has to do with hardware.

Could you maybe tell us more about your PC like does it have a external graphic card or onboard graphics card.. and what operating system are you using?

Did you use a disk or anything to reload the operating system? Or just use the factory reset in the control panel? If the only thing that fucked it up was you reseting it, then its probably an unsupported (older) BIOS issue that had a patch that fixed this problem for the version of windows that you tried to load. So when you factory reset it, it got rid of any of those bios updates, since it is 7 years old and software changes every day.

So you'll want to download the newest version of the laptops motherboards BIOS, should be on the manufacturers website, and see if you can find a guide to put it on a flash drive to flash it onto the computer on boot, updating the old BIOS. Hopefully fixing the problem. Or try loading another OS by disk or flash drive if possible.

$199 for "online support"? You could call a tech guy to come over to your house and fix it for probably much less than that.
