Question:Do we need to respect everyone who are older than us even though they aren't respecting us?

Looking forward for answers from different perspectives.

 

Courtesy is given, respect is earned. Everyone should be courteous, polite, and considerate, but respect, I believe needs to be earned.

Age does not earn respect, as there are people a lot older than me who don't act their age. I agree with Drayy on this in that we should be courteous and polite, and that respect is something that is earned, not given freely because of an age difference.

 

Respect goes both ways and shouldn't automatically be assumed because someone is older. Being polite is expected to anyone but if I were disrespected by someone older than myself I would start to lose respect in them.

Definitely not. I hate people who think older/elders = auto respect. I say yes ma'am and sir but that's about as far as I go when meeting someone new. The moment you're rude to me, I drop that. You get one chance. You don't need to earn respect though, as I think everyone deserves respect until something happens, but you definitely can lose it real quick.

 

Someone's age doesn't speak for the respect they receive.

 

In general you should respect your olders but this doesn't mean they shouldn't show you respect. There are people older than me I definitely don't respect depends on the person

 

I've learned to respect my elders despite them being rude or not. I'm always going to respect them and be the bigger person.

 

Respect people for what they do, and what they stand for. Surviving for multiple decades isn't exactly hard these days, so you shouldn't get automatic respect because you managed to not get hit by a car.

 

I'm not sure what exactly you mean, or what gestures you consider being respectful. But yeah I think regardless of age you should greet people appropriately or politely. Hold the door. Please/Thank you. This world could use more kindness. But if you greet someone with "Good morning" and a smile, and they sneer or don't reply. Then FUCK that. Everyone deserves respect until they show otherwise. But when they do, fuck em.

 

I treat them the same way I treat everyone. Respect is the default until someone gives me a reason to not show respect.

 

I think mutual human respect is a necessity, but there is no reason to blindly respect and admire your elders. Age does not lead to inherent wisdom and there are plenty of people two-to-three x my age that I do not think deserve my respect. Respect should be mutual and while there may need to be a very basic level of respect (i.e. you're human so I'm not going to kill you), I hardly find the inherent idea of respecting elders reasonable. As Shredder already stated, surviving is hardly a feat in industrialized countries.

In areas where survival demands much more from the individual, then maybe respect can be demanded.

I show respect until I learn if the person is worthy of such respect. I do not respect a lot of elders due to their inability to see the problems they have created for the youth, then blame it on the youth.

 

Respect YOUR elders I would say. When I was in my homeland, respect would be automatic for the elderly, as that was how I was raised, and they deserved/appreciated it. Moved to Deutschland, and well. When your respect gets spat upon by most elderly who want/need any reason to complain about anything.. Hard to love a nation that hates you.
