Just because a band says they aren't emo, doesn't mean they aren't. I know plenty of self-proclaimed progressive rock/metal bands who don't have any progessive elements in their music. These bands (the ones you said weren't emo) have emo elements, which is why critics/users call them emo. Emo may be a subgenre for them, but they are still emo.
