Why you cannot go faster than the speed of light

Nothing moves through space faster than light, true - but space itself can stretch at a speed that sends objects away from each other faster than light.

Which is why time travel to the past is impossible :)

That's an interesting theory. There was actually an experiment done on that, where beams of light were shone off some mountains in California. If one beam traveled a set number of miles faster than the other, then the rotation of the Earth would actually push their speed over the speed of light. However, it didn't work. They reached their destinations at slightly different times.

This is very true. Our universe is currently expanding with exponential speed. If we project this into infinity, particles in a few billion years will be moving away from each other at faster-than-light speeds.

i thought the universe doesnt just expand but also pulls itself together?

It may, at some point, if dark energy decays. For now, however, it's just expanding.

    very interesting topic....great idea

there's light everywhere, where its dark or "light"...

sounds like the wrong answer but im right x_X

    lol...

I personally think it's possible.. I think there is simply flaws in laws of physics, as well as altered perception of what is the truth..

and what about space warping. Warping space would allow you to travel as if you were moving faster than light by changing the structure of the universe.

Actually this would lead into a discussion of black holes. Which have maybe infinite mass. Even light gets sucked in, past the horizon that is. So unless there is a way of getting to a blackhole, being able to go into one, and then somehow surviving by escaping the singularity, then you may travel faster than the speed of light. Assuming that the blackhole is connected to the mathematically proven existing white holes that have never actually had any physical proof. And then that wouldn't be a black hole, it would be a wormhole.

Nice transformations of subjects, eh? smooth

    Well, Einstein's theory predicts that:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole

So, it's not that light is "sucked in", rather, space is warped to the degree that you would need to travel faster than light speed to escape.

Doesnt einsteins theory prove that when you go at the speed of light time slows down? or is that someone else?

Why would particles be moving faster then the speed of light, because our universe is expanding?

Well, they actually can't move faster than the speed of light (discounting such phenomena as photon cycling, quantum mechanics, etc.).

I only meant why would things increase in speed when the universe is expanding.

They shouldn't, unless they are caught in the fabric of space-time's expansion.

Veeery interesting thread! :p ... good reading.

let's hope i understood this right...

Hmm, I wonder, what you guess would happen (as you say you move back in time) if you look at your handwatch while travelling?
    - since you state, you travel back in time, would it show ealier?

well, as I see it.. I must admit i haven't studied it much..

I believe there is a maximum speedlimit (there's a maximum with everything.. the absolute zero, ect, is at -273.15 °C, the universe isn't infinite too, since (and as many of you say) it expands. things can't be infinite if it expands), why shouldn't there be a speedlimit, when there's limits on everything else? (as I see it).

But I can't make it up with my self if that would be at the speed of light. I read some time ago, that researchers have teleported molecules. So, right now I'm wondering, if "teleporting" takes time?

I think that you can exceed the speed of light i guess. But that's just me thinking logic. I don't know how the laws of physic would respond my opinion.

I heard that someone was able to teleport a mouse a like 2 feet, but it died a week later, but I never found any proof of this...

Why you cannot go faster than the speed of light

even if you could go as fast as light what would the point be... you would need to be able to travel faster in order for it to mean anything. and even when you do get to the speed of light in theory time slows down so you would remain 30 (for example) and people on earth would have aged years

Why you cannot go faster than the speed of light

*nods* so the trick is to modify your localised environment so that the speed of light is faster and then travel just under that. No laws broken, and everyone gets to go super quick like in the movies! :)

Why you cannot go faster than the speed of light

    ...

"Right" after Big Bang, the newborn univers grew from being smaller than a subatom, to stretch over 3 Kilometers.
We are talking about a speed of 2 Billion Kilometers a second, or aproxematly, a speed 7000 times faster than the speed of light.

Some people say the it was the space, and not the particles that grew with overlight speed. Meaning that space it self can expand way beyond overlight speed, but the particles them selfs cannot expand beyond overlight speed.

Space is yet another thing that we just simply dont know a shit about, but anything and everything that has a sertain speed, must be something.
Meaning that space is SOMETHING, but which we yet havent found out what is. Which means that the speed of light can be broken.

I believe that we one day will be able to move through out the univers with way beyond the speed of light.
