The final action to thwart all MSN imitates!

As most of you know MSN imitate or MSN mimic has been spread quite rapidly and has been used in many recent scamming reports.

Well, most people say have them PM you, and in the end, it is safe, but only to some extent. In this thread I will explain to you how to go into a trade knowing, you will not get scammed, if you want that knowledge, keep reading.

First, download Messenger Plus! Live for Windows Live Messenger if you don't already have it. You can do so by going here, http://www.msgpluslive.net/. For a direct download link you can go here, http://download.msgpluslive.net/setu...usLive-423.exe.

The second step you will wish to take is to download MessengerDiscovery Live from http://live.msgdiscovery.com/. For the direct download link, http://live.msgdiscovery.com/?page=download3.

After downloading and installing that, open up Windows Live Messenger and the MessengerDiscovery Live icon, should appear right next to your WLM icon.

Double click on it or right click on it and select the "Settings..." option. Once that screen comes up, click on the WLM tab, it's the second one from the left. Then, if not already on General Settings in the sub tab, select it, it's the first one. After that, go to the 6th check box which should read "Disable contact personal messages and now playing messages". CHECK THAT BOX!

Now, you are set, see, by disabling that, it is impossible for people to use the PSM or personal message script/addon that allows them to show up another e-mail address. Whatever address that is under their name, IS UNEDITABLE, UNCHANGABLE, there is nothing that user or you can do to change it to anything other than the e-mail address that user is on.

Now, I might aswell point it out before someone else does, it also has the !imitate command which is exactly what some people have been using to scam. I don't advise you use it or try to frame people by it as it shows up on your screen, just not the others. If you wish to go have fun with a friend, so be it, but otherwise, don't use it.

Now, to the part where you won't get scammed. First off, follow the guide above and disable personal messages. Another plus for this program is when someone logs in, it says THEIR E-MAIL ADDRESS and not their screen name, making it easy to tell if someone is trying to impersonate another moderator or official MM.

Secondly, watch the "Last message received" alert on the bottom of your conversation. People using the imitate with this program, and most other imitates, will ALWAYS show the person who is using the imitate typing, instead of the person who is supposedly talking. Although this isn't a for sure way to tell if it's a legit person or not, this can easily identify if someone is using imitate on you.

Last but not least, have them PM you, but not just a PM saying Hi, or confirmed. Make sure you say to them to send you a PM with their e-mail address, yours, and the other party you are trading with along with the RSN of the MM, and although not necessary, even the RSN's of the other parties. If you do not do that, although it's hard, people have worked it out or tricked staff or MMs into MMing the victim when they were MMing a different trade. Some MMs may even require you to send them a PM first to verify you own the account, even that can be faked though.

If you follow these simple steps and use caution and common sense, I can guarantee you WILL never be scammed by an imposter or imitate member again.

Thank you Yakov for the sticky and the rest for the thank yous. This program is also good to have just because of the many options it has which is extremely useful, even if you don't use MSN a lot or know much about it.

I think disabling personal messages was possible to disable on the older MSN Messenger versions, but not on Windows Live Messenger, therefore this program is the only way I know of doing it.

I am currently working on a simple Messenger Plus! script which will do the same, but will be much easier to install as it will only be a few lines long.

I'll keep this updated and probably add a few more or different things one can do.

Thanks for taking the time to help us out :) I really appreciate it.

Even though the really new users usually aren't smart enough to read a sticky =/ And they need it the most.
