Nudging them usually fixes it. Well for me it does, oh and refresh the connection in the preferences maybe.

It's either,

1.) The contact is offline

or

2.) You lost connection

 

It's usually that the person you're talking to has dropped out of connection, but the Server has not yet found them to reply.
