My Theory on looking back in time

Say you were on a planet 10 light years away from earth, then you looked trough a telescope towards earth, you would be able to see what happened 10 years ago wouldn't you?

This has been bogolling my mind for ages

    Discuss possible or not?
    Its a cross with jesus
The image that shall inspire all, yes its real it was taken by the huble space telescope early 2006

If you had a really good telescope then i think yes? because if you look up at the sky most of the stars arent even there anymore so you are Kinda looking in the past.

You could if you were already there. Traveling the 10 light years would take ages though.

No. That means that the time on that planet is 10 years ahead or behind Earth's time. But I can think why you believe in that theory, but aren't we looking at another planet, not Earth?

The best telescopes are being used to explore newly discovered planets and some and being used to find god, which I think is a waste, you find god by trying to find him like that.

Assuming you had a telescope that was powerful enough, and had brilliant resolution, then yes, you would see that planet as it had been 10 years ago.

lol, I didn't think it would be possible. But now that I think of it I guess you would see the glow of the earth but unless you had like super resolution you couldn't. But I am going to look up that on google now...lol

theretically, if you had a spaceship that could travele faster than light, and the ship had an excellent telescope, you could watch the world in rewind, because you are traveling faster than the light comeing from the earth.

Yes, if you were already on that planet, and you had a quality telescope powerful enough, you could see the Earth as it had been 10 years ago...Winter gives the perfect example right there why.

You would see the exterior movement of the Earth's atmosphere and the rotation of Earth but not the events going on on Earth.

My Theory on looking back in time

It's not like your looking back in time, your looking at real time, but it took a while to travel. An example of this is sports broadcasting. If you've ever been in a box seat at a hockey game for example, you'll notice theres a 4-6 second delay on what happens in the game and when it is broad casted on live TV. This doesn't mean we are looking back in time, it means it takes a small amount of time to be processed. The same thing goes for the time it takes light to travel throughout space to reach the point you are looking at. When you are looking at the computer screen in front of you, there is a very small amount of time it takes the light to go from your monitor to your eye. Does this mean that you are looking back into time when you do everything in life? No it simply means that light is limited in speed. Sure, it's not something you can notice, but it is there.

A lot of people don't realize the time is only relative, and is not a constant. Now that probably doesn't make much sense to you, so I'll attempt to explain as best I can. Basically the faster you are moving the slower time appears to be moving because of the curvature of space and time. An example of this, would be someone that was on an airplane their whole lives, would live two whole seconds longer because they are affected differently by time. Now, that really isn't much of a difference because you'd spend your whole life on an airplane (not possible) to add an extra 2 seconds to your life span, but it is important for physics, because if we somehow do find a way to travel at the speed of light, during that time the people traveling at the speed of light (or close to it) could have years of earth time pass, thousands, and it would only feel like a short time to them.
