Gambling: How do you restrain yourself from tilt betting?

What methods do you use to restrain yourself from going all in or making high percentage bets?

I ask this because I see it all the time. Many people go "on tilt" and lose or get lucky and win only to lose again.

I myself even have a problem with it. Many times I'll go on tokenbets with $100 and work myself up to ~$250-500. When my friends are watching and telling me to walk or I have a random streak of common sense I'll cash out a happy camper. Usually I'll keep betting until I'm down to around what I started with or even less.

My worst case happened two nights ago. I was staking and started the night with 3.8b. Within 4-6 hours I was up to 24b. It was the most I had ever made off of staking. At that moment I should have been happy but I couldn't resist the temptation to bet more. Another stake and I went on a session and I lost 5x streak totaling 9b. At that moment I logged off with a total profit of 11.2b, but it made me so sick that I wanted to puke.

That's not what I meant by this thread. I don't have a problem where I lose all the time, I am addicted but gambling actually supplements my salary by almost 25%, so it's not a problem.

I'm just careless with my profits sometimes because I have an issue where I feel like "well this is winnings so it doesn't really matter."

You say you're addicted, but that it's not a problem, but then you go on to talk about a problem. As long as you are unwilling to admit that your addiction IS the problem, then you'll never be able to stop whenever you're ahead... You'll just keep playing.

I'm sorry if it comes across that way. What I mean is, your inability to quit while you're ahead stems from your attachment to the activity. Until you are able to recognize when you're falling into that state of mind where "Oh, I can keep playing", until you can let go of your attachments to that thrill, you will always struggle with stopping yourself.

That actually makes a lot of sense now, thanks for the transparency. Your suggestion seems very useful now.

I have that problem a lot. I used to gamble alot with BTC on huge pots. It's really easy to just toss money away when you really didn't work at all to get, it just kinda fell into your hands by luck. Another thing is the whole "revenge" aspect of losing, where it is really easy to get caught up in emotions and immediately try to win back what you lost.

Regardless my method to deal with that type of gambling is reminding me of how much that money is actually worth, not in pixels. Like instead of .5 BTC, I remind myself I could eat out one meal every single day for a month,or that's a brand new TV, or I could buy a ton of clothes with it. You have to mentally convert the pixels/imaginery denominations of currency into real life value. Hope this is of help!

I'm glad you brought that up as well. Sometimes it's hard to keep an eye on the real value of tokens, btc, or gold. It's not like when I bet 100m I automatically think $100.

Depends on what you're gambling on. If it's a house edge game like dice ect just stop it's not a profitable activity. If it's like NL poker realize there's variance even the best players lose pots and play within my own set bankroll management strategy and I shouldn't ever let it put me into debt.

Mind over matter, you're making the decision to gamble. Grow the fuck up and stop gambling if you cant afford it. Trust me I know. I was a gambling addict for years. I learned when to cash out. Holding to much money always leads to worst case situations.

It's all about discipline. You have to set limits for yourself and stick to them. It really is all about self-control. It's just like drinking, in a way, because you have to pace yourself and stick to the limits you set for yourself before you start. It is also similar because you have to know when to get up and stop. If you end up losing your self control, that's when bad things happen. So, in regards to gambling...you have to be reasonable and not let your anger or recklessness cause you to make dumb, rash decisions on impulse. You have to stop and think of what you're going to do next, and how you are doing in the present. Make a plan and stick to it.

If it's a skill-based game that you have an edge in, just keep reminding yourself of that. It's about long-run profit.

I like taking in $20 and having a good time with it, after that it's it.

1] Gambling isn't a source of in-come. You shouldn't gamble to make money, you should gamble for fun and hope to make a bit of cash as you do as a added bonus.
2] Stick to limits, don't go any higher than limits.
3] Once you've lost the limit, stop and do something else.
    4] Never chase losses.

As said before I have a gambling roll and a life roll. It's not about me degenerately gaming. It was just about figuring people's strategy on sticking to limits.
