Automatically give all banned users access to the spam forum

@Sythe recently made a suggestion where there could be anonymous guest posting in the spam forum

The potential problems with this:

• Actual spam / flooding from guests
• Encourages super low quality content
• Probably a lot of stuff that'll break rules
• Probably harder to moderate

My suggestion:

• Give the "banned" usergroup permission to post in spam forum
• It could also be a quarantined sub-section in the spam forum - to keep easily triggered people out

This would give a boost in activity on the site, and it could also help gather statistics and information as we move forward with more market banned users. Everyone would be permitted a minimum voice in the spam forum. No private messaging, no access to posting in other sections, signatures, or anything else. People would still be "banned" - they could just post in the spam forum. It can't do any harm and is better than enabling guest posting. It would also bring in a lot of activity without manual intervention (having to move people to market banned one at a time.) We could even add a thread in there for active banned users to request to be market banned and post information on their ban for a chance to contribute even more.

At the very least it would be an interesting experiment.

I'm also a little cautious about actually having "banned" users posting everywhere in the SF, seems like guests and others would get awfully confused wouldn't they?

 

No from me. I know had this been the case, I would have had a dox of me spammed in the SF for quite some time.

 

Very similar to what Dunworry said there are some people who just shouldn't be allowed back. If you think they should be allowed just in the SF then I doubt there's much damage they can do in other community related sections so just suggest them for DNT. It's not like there's a high denial rate if you look at some of the people Big Rich has actually unbanned so there's a pretty fair chance they'll be allowed back in some capacity. If by some miracle they fail to receive DNT status there's probably a good reason which would be the same reason we don't want them back.

 

The issue with this is, as @Bus369 puts it, they have to be "nominated." I want a large boost in activity. And having a "sanctuary" of some sort, they could "nominate" themselves to come back.

This is exactly why it would be better to have banned members be able to post instead of guests. With banned members, you can just suspend their account for X amount of time I'm pretty sure. I don't know how the forum software specifically works, but you should be able to allow the "banned" usergroup to post, and then still suspend them using the forum tools.

By the way, if someone really wants to do that they can register a new account.

This was a different suggestion by Sythe. He wanted to allow guests to post. I'm saying banned members, since most of the active lurkers/guests that would post are banned members.

If there's concerns like this, the section could be quarantined. Guests could be given a warning, similar to how Reddit quarantines subreddits.

 

I'm pretty sure Big Rich made a post saying the DNT was a sort of "instead of" idea as opposed to the anonymous posting.

Also a few users have already made disputes requesting DNT status so what's stopping them from doing that rather than just posting in the spam forum?

 

Think of it as a gateway drug. If people can in some way participate in Sythe again, they will be more likely to want to return and to request DNT. We could also use this as a "training camp" of sorts to weed out the people who will just ruin their second chance.

It's easier to pick out the good apples if the apples are in sight.

 

If you look at whose already been unbanned it's pretty evident there is no weeding out and very few people are even being denied.. DNT is already the "training camp" or "gateway drug"... We don't need a training camp for the training camp...
