    There brainless eh?

    Hello Website Feedback fanatics. Last night, I was visited in my dreams by a large, flaming T who shared this vision with me (me and my friend came up with an idea).

    Basically it’s an idea that will help with both the macro problem and with the problem of un-knowing people entering the game by altering the account creation process.
    Yes I know that many people have made idea*s about countering macro’s, from releasing scorpions into the essence mines to making the fishing skill p2p only (don’t ask). Well here is mine, that is supposed to harm all macro’s at once instead of only targeting a single group of them

    As you know, a new account is created using the ‘Create a new account’ button on Runescape’s main page. One follows the procedure by clicking that they are 13 years or older, then chooses a fitting username and clicks the box to agree with the terms of service, and all that’s needed now is to fill in a certain word which you use to log on with to create the account.

    The first part of the idea is as following: after one has followed the instructions and created the account with a pass and such, one has to undergo a final part before the account is actually created. This is a small test consisting of five questions, which are all related to the protection of an account, how one should behave ingame towards other players and how one should be careful not to break the rules.

    These questions will be random, seeing as there are obviously a hundred possible questions to be asked: but asking these will only put the new player off. Five will do fine. There should be 5 different answers, none correct or false, but points shall be given for each answer, depending on which one. Then again these answers are in a random position, and will also have a random letter assigned to it that is used to answer.

    At the bottom of the screen, a textbox will appear in which one has to fill in the letters, which he feels to be the best fitting, this for example will lead to the following:

    C - C - A - A - D (Mtoise has a similar idea - See P2 for confirmation that I can use his name)

    Seeing as there will be 5 questions, with 5 possible answers, each answer has a different value between 1 and 5, and that for 5 questions make the minimum amount of points 5 and the maximum 25. I propose that at least 18 points are required for the account process to be completed, else the scores will be erased and 5 new questions will be asked.

    The randomness of this process will hopefully put off macro programs for a while, too, although I’m not entirely sure of this. They will be dealt with in the next idea inside this thread.

    To those that think this will not help much, I believe it will at least teach the unknowing people a bit, and the stronghold of security was made after the same principles as this idea: in fact a lot of the questions asked inside the stronghold could be directly copied for this idea. I don’t see how this could possibly harm anyone, except for putting off an immature brat who would most likely scam about 20 people before quitting his account and leaving for another game.

    In short, when creating an account you will be asked to fill in a small random survey to help you understand how to behave and play in the game.

    The idea directly aimed at killing macro’s is as following: each IP Addy is allowed to create One account per week. This will effectively halt macros as they are set up to create many, many more accounts a day. According to the sticky in rants, Jagex bans many accounts per week, with only a short period between account creation and account termination. Following this idea, the macro programs will no longer be able to create that many accounts, and with them constantly being banned by the mighty lords of Jagex the infestation will be over within the week.

    Now of course you can say that IP’s can be changed, and this is the truth. In the sticky of which the code has been given above Jagex admits that IP’s are sometimes being changed to avoid IP bans. However, do you honestly believe that one day after this ‘of course hidden’ update all the macros will have adapted to his?

    I think that in the worst-case scenario, after 2 weeks the macros will have been adapted in such a way that they will change the IP after the creation of a new account. This will still make the process of pumping out new accounts slower then before, and give us at least 1 week rest of macro’s before they start to appear again.

    In the best case scenario the macro programmers will collectively get ill and no longer be able to change the programs so they will not pose a threat anymore

    Personally I think that it will take them at least a few weeks to fully adapt their programs to evade this system, giving us players around 3 weeks rest and macro-free worlds before they slowly start appearing again.

    Now of course you must realise, that if a program keeps changing its IP every 30 minutes, this does not go unnoticed. And as such this might pose even a greater risk to the macro programs than what I have described here.

    Comments & Ideas by others:

    * 04mault:

    I support one hundred percent

    Although it is only going to be for a few weeks before the Macro's start to adapt, it would be a nice, peacful few weeks -- Like you said.

    I can, however think of one/two downsides

    1* It may be quite a lot of work for Jagex, just for a few weeks (Or would it? I'm no expert at making websites with a system like you've suggested).

    2~ Some strange things may happen to the economy for those few weeks. No bots to fish, no bots to WC. Prices may go up for a while, then it would go back down again as soon as Bots had 'evolved'.

    --

    I think that if there was a bank of 50 questions, that where changed every fortnight -- It could be a slight bit more effective

    * Maniacal Bug

    Make a ridiculously simple question. For example: What number is inside the brackets? [10]

    and questions would be Select One as opposed to typing. There would be A, B, C, D, E, and F bubbles. 6 bubbles per question, 5 questions, makes 30 bubbles. 5 would be selected. Also a certain thread I read had an idea about a verification code much like the waking up code in RuneScape Classic. It would show a random word, you type that word, then it lets you wake up. Same thing with account creation, plus the 5 questions, would make account creation a force-field against auto-making autos. 24 hours between each account is also a good idea. Mix my revised question system and the Verification Code i heard about with your ideas, and TADA! A perfect defense against autoers!
