That is true, and I thought that as well, hence why I think maybe a sticky would benefit it better.

What I was sugesting was the same thing albeit in a different format that way @Sythe can forego having a sub forum where people request the SRB. There is no need for a separate suggestion as what I suggested is along the same lines as what the OP is suggesting. What I proposed is a plugin that allows a user to choose to SRB without having to post a thread and a staff member ban them. @Sonia the point is to make it less of a headache for staff and for users as well.

Ah okai, I mis-understood what exactly a plug-in would do. That sounds great if there's no other technical hitches with it.

other than setting up the plugin there shouldn't be any hitches at all. Once set up, its easy.

For example @Sonia, say you are going to be away from Sythe for 6 months or so w/e, you simply go to your profile and select the option to essentially "deactivate" your account. *BAM* now you are SRB'd and cant login/post/PM etc. Later on, say you want to "reactivate" your account and get back on Sythe; well all you need to do is post in the appropriate sub forum and request it. Less work for staff and the plugin can ALSO differentiate you from an actual BANNED user who violated the rules. It's actually an awesome plugin and idea!

I support Seph's suggestion, but not sure about Wortel's suggestion. Wortel's suggestion should be based on how many people actually request a SRB. If it's only like 1 every month then I think it is a bit of an overkill to make an entire subforum for the 1 user each month. If there are plenty of users that request a SRB then I support it though.

When you quote a post there's no real need to @ tag as well. The quoting itself is a tag and alert notification.

So this would be a plugin within Xen, and we wouldn't have to download anything extra? Or? I mean that sounds pretty neat, I was going to question about IP changes etc But that's not relative because once un-SRB'd you just log back in. Uhm how exactly is it possible for a plugin to differentiate an SRB'd user from banned members?

I must be too novice to understand exactly what the whole concept is, but what I meant by hitches is, it would be secure to have and there couldn't be a chance of hacking through it, or anything to do with leaks etc. I don't know how it works, considering it's through Xen I'm thinking this wouldn't be an issue?

With the plugin I linked, you only need a sub-forum for users to request reactivation. They could post anon just like in the dispute forum

It's an addon through Xenforo (the forum) it allows a user to go to their user profile and essentially "ban" themselves (SRB) which we shall call "deactivating" their account. Once done the User's Usertitle is changed to "Deactivated" and username color etc changed to reflect that (this is all done by the forum software on the website through PHP etc). Once a user wishes to return all they have to do is post in an Anon subforum and ask for reactivation. A staff member then goes and simply moves said user from the "deactivated" usergroup to a "normal" usergroup etc

This has nothing to do with IP addys. And yes it would be secure as it is part of the website. When I say plugin I mean a "XenForo" plugin, which is essentially an addon to Sythe's forum software.

I hope this clears things up for you =]

"Deactivate your account" button could be in user control panel but what difference would it make? Just no banned markup and no banned tag? I'm fine with that if Sythe wants to set it up. It's not like we hand out many SRBs anyway

Superman, no... that's not how this plugin works. The way it works is that once a user goes into their account settings and "deactivates" their account then XenForo would subsequently move them to a specific user group and then the plugin has the ability to modify their user title to whatever is set in AdminCP (i.e. "Deactivated User"). I also believe it can change the username much like Xenforo does now (Greyed out and crossed out).. I wouldn't see why it couldn't seeing as how the user title and such are controlled by the user group and not the plugin.

That again would be controlled by the usergroup that the user gets moved to upon deactivation. The plugin allows a user to self-ban i.e deactivate their account. Once they do this they are moved into said usergroup. On the back end you simply have a SRB'd or "Deactivated" usergroup which prevents login, posts, replies etc but it does NOT delete or "soft delete" their content". You then would set up a forum/subforum for "Guests" (Like disputes) specifically for users wishing to reactivate.

Once a user wishes to return they simply post in said forum/subforum and upon approval staff can move them back into their previous usergroup, etc.

Yeah I mean I'm fine with it, my point was that Sythe just needs to add the plugin/usergroup/make sure it's working properly. I'll clarify my previous posts... There's very little practical difference between this and what we do right now. The difference seems to be that

    a) the user can trigger this themselves
    b) there is no banned tag or username markup

    Am I right so far?

    Superman,

    a) Yes - provided the plugin is utilized :)
    b) Yes - Markup would be set by the "Deactivated" Usergroup

    and dont forget:

    C) Per the suggestions, SRB'd users would still have a sub forum to request Reactivation

PS - Sorry for the confusion on my part

Yes but we already have about 30 plugins... it's gonna get out of hand if we add plugins for every little thing
