How can we protect our schools, colleges & offices from the maniacs?

Many of the classrooms at the University where I work open to the outside, and either don't have locks or have to be key-locked.

These are fire-doors though. Steel plates inside them. If proper locks are installed so that faculty/students can lock them from the inside, lives could be saved.

I watched a program early this morning that said with a stun gun you have to let the assailant get close, and if they are stronger, they can over power you. The same was true of pepper sprays. This program was selling a crazy kind of flashlight with a propelled pepper spray and a laser targetting device. The light was blinding, the laser allowed the victim to target the eyes of the attacker, and the pepper spray shot out 20 feet. I liked that.

At VT, the attacker chained doors closed. Can't do that where I work. None of the doors are built in that fashion, and even if they were, there are always alternate exits.

My Friend told me that if he was ever attacked at his high school he just prays the desk is stronger than the gun because "there aren't any windows in any of the classes to jump out of."

One security expert on TV pointed out that no one seemed to try to assault Cho. No one threw books or computers or anything to trip Cho up. They were willing to stand in his path and be shot at to protect others, but were taught not to tackle and attack.

So, what would you do to protect yourself where YOU work or attend school?

 

Well, location is a factor. In some of the collages in the south, there isn't much money in the budget for updating on security to that measure; however, if you watched a few news reports, the faculty was very, lets just say, slow.

He was in the school for quite some time after he shot the first two people, the police weren't notified properly, that could have saved many more lives.

Also the psychiatrist Cho was seeing did not take the proper precautions when he read some of his horrifying writings. The psychiatrist lacked the proper knowledge to know that this person was on the brink. So I think better faculty would play a particular role.

To answer your final question, at my school, we have drills and precautions that we take to secure ourselves when anything dangerous happens. There are windows to jump out of, and the doors have double pained glass with wire inside, so to answer your question; yes I do feel safe.

 

umm...im not from USA,so i dont hav so much stuff with tht lilbit less maniacs i think,i think tht at day in school main door etc should be locked and maybe sum bodyguard behind it like if sum1 wanna go home bodyguard will open door and then close it,and lot of bodyguards in school but i think in my school(in Estonia) is safe btw why WoW owns is banned?

 

If someone was shooting up my school, me and a few friends would tackle him at the same time, and he couldn't react in time.

 

Chances are two out of whoever ran at the guy would end up dead, assuming he knew how to use a gun. If he had a shotgun I wouldn't be surprised if you were all killed.

 

i would depend on the schools lockdown sequence and how fast that is.

It probably wouldn't last that long here.....I would have used a strategic plan to grab the gun from him....
He will die....And I would have been happy to have killed or tried to kill "terrorists"; because that is all i have been waiting for, the chance to kill some stupid motherf-er that wants to kill everyone at my school.

Security won't do much. Even if you have the best security available someone that is as determined, comitted, and insane as Cho will do whatever it takes to make people suffer.

Personally I blame society. He was picked at in highschool, when he was younger and even in college. They made him a monster. If we don't want monsters like him we gotta change society, not waste more tax payers money on security.

 

No, he was mentally unstable and the damn idiots around him couldn't tell.

 

Meh.

Half of my friends carry wepons. So i feel safe.
