The Ultimate Metal Thread (Music From All Metal Genres)

I decided to make this thread because i got really sick of people not knowing the difference between all of the Metal Genre's. I also made this because i am sick of people stereotyping Metal to be only screaming and noise without any talent at all. This will prove the disbelievers wrong.

    Heavy Metal

Heavy Metal is mostly music from the 80's-90's and can be signalized by it's heavy usage of falsette song and screaming together with medium paced songs and good usage of guitar solos that contains alot of elements from classical music.

    Example Songs:

Judas Priest - You've got another thing coming (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU7sBgjKDCI)

Rage - Waiting for the moon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNt-qQ6gleo)

Dream Evil - The book of heavy metal ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-pN8qAiZhQ)

Manowar - The gods made heavy metal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ob0rvVwJueo) (no real video)

    Hard Rock

Hard Rock is the heavier style of music, it's the first style of heavier music to ever come up. It can be signalized by Heavy and Dark riffs along with a mediocre singer that often sings with a little rage in the voice. Solos are often complex and long (some songs can even consist in solos only).

    Example Songs:

Black Sabbath - Paranoid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOV18ePpuic) (Live, but sounds like original)

    Candlemass - Black Dwarf (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8th_3AoTm_E)

Metal Church - Mirror of Lies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWXXQBM6K80)

    Power Metal

Power Metal is probably the type of metal that requires the most talent of them all. Signalements are: Fast Guitar Riffs, Double Pedal Drums, Screaming Voice (similar to Heavy Metal) and awesome timed solos often with the theme of fantasy.

    Example Songs:

Dragonforce - Through the fire and flames (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDesqj7HOgA)

Helloween - Ride the Sky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjWxsScxA1k) (Stupid Video)

Hammerfall - Hearts on fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RPjm7TSrwk)

    Thrash Metal

Thrash Metal is a heavy metal genre often containing very fast riffs and singers that don't really sing. It's more like screaming in rage. Again, many nice solos and fine examples of musical skills here. Lyrics are much about fighting and violence.

    Example Songs:

Pantera - Cowboys from Hell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV2xVvJddxY)

    Metallica - Seek & Destroy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnxbuCg0Hkk)

Exodus - Bonded by Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjTrr7wiVeI)

Whiplash - Message in Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxu0f1GP8tA) (Kinda bad quality)

Slayer - Reign in Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHkxPilDpSY)

    Black Metal

Getting heavier now, Black Metal is very symphonic music often about satan, the devil and other anti-christ related things. Instead of a singer, they often have a "Growler" to sound darker and orchestras to make it sound more church-like. They often wear white make-up and blood effects to make it scarier.

    Example Songs:

Cradle of Filth - Nemesis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8HTjQd887U)

Dimmu Borgir - The Serpentine Offering (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HD5DcKBY5E)

Children of Bodom - Everytime i die (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjZpqgeiGFQ) (Not really black metal, but very hard to fit in a category)

    Death Metal

Death Metal is one of the heaviest genres, only to be beaten by Grindcore. Death Metal bands often have very dark tuned guitars with psycho-like riffs and common usage of "Blast Beat" drummings and a dark growling voice. The lyrics contains violence with organic nature (killing, raping corpses, blood everywhere etc).

    Example Songs:

Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYgCBJP_3jU) (Live, better than original)

Deicide - Scars of the Crucifix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cyZj9GUXD4)

    Aborted - Meticulous Invagination (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQuqZLHGxDc)

Six Feet Under - TNT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOJVXheNrqs) (AC/DC cover live, but freaking awesome)

    Grindcore

The very heaviest of all genres. Basically, you can't hear anything, none of the people in a grindcore bands need skills at all and all they do is sound screamy.

    Example Songs:

Anal Cunt - Pepe The Gay Waiter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z8wksVGxVg)

    Napalm Death - Scum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzmXQY0l5Xs)

I didn't post anymore Grindcore bands, since they all suck major ass anyway :)

I hope you enjoyed this little list i took an hour to set up.

NOTE: I didn't post shit like Nu-Metal and Metalcore because it simply doesn't have a place in metal at all.

    Any questions, please reply here.

I'm a big metal fan. Been listening to a lot of death metal recently. I say Vital Remains is one of the best death metal bands ever. They are my favorite. I don't like much thrash metal, Slayer is okay but their music gets annoying after awhile. Pantera is good but I didn't know they were considered thrash metal I thought they were just heavy metal. I like some power metal, mainly Dragonforce. Anyways here's the point of my post. Do you know any bands that sound similar to Dragonforce? If you do thanks if you don't well at least you tried :) .

EDIT: Oh I forget to mention this. The best thing about death metal is the drumming. Everyone should listen to it once in awhile to here drummers with actual talent.

Yes, i agree death metal is awesome, you just have to get used to it :)

    To your question:
I don't know of any bands that sound like DragonForce, they're one of a kind, however there are several other power metal bands such as:

    Rhapsody
    Helloween
    Gamma Ray
    Hammerfall
    Blind Guardian
    Edguy
    Avantasia
    Cellador
    Kamelot
    Sonata Arctica
    Firewind
Power Quest (Yes i know, gay name lol)

i added it just to show people what black metal is, since most people have heard them. I'm not really much of a black metal fan (except for Dimmu Borgir), so i don't know many bands.

I have to disagree with your placing on Black Sabbath. I think they're more industrial/heavy metal. But most of the stuff you listed seems about right. The closest thing to Dragonforce would probably be under speed metal labels.

black metal I would put stuff like satyricon, gorgoroth I think it is etc.

Power metal usually has alot of prog influence ie the keyboards and synth and technical guitar stuff. You forgot metalcore! the only genre of music where kids can twirl around like ninjas and think they are tough lol.

Man please.... Children of bodom is not anything like black metal this makes me almost cry... Oh and also the bands you staed on heavy metal genre= NO ://// Theyre most likely metal I'm sorry... Oh and CoB is more of melodic extreme metal... Black metal= Singing from very low like death metal, but on black metal it's much talking about satanic things.

EDIT: Power metal = singing about heroic things, knights kingdoms, dragons etc. And, it's not screaming. Sometimes they sing very high, could be compared to opera singing

I think Slipknot should be one of the examples of Heavy/Nu metal, since everyone knows Slipknot, & they have on of the best Metal guitarists :)
