They sky rocketed because of invention , I'd assume their crashing because the hype is gone.

Some of the gold resellers have told me they think it's because of another dupe.

100% this. There's some kind of dupe going around, it's nothing to do with invention and even during the "invention hype" the prices didn't increase by much (maybe ~$0.02-$0.03 per mill.)

Also, there was an announcement that Runefest won't be accepting bonds anymore so people are liquidating their bonds and selling the gold for $.

The last major dupe dropped gold prices from .75/m to .10/m in less then 2 weeks. I believe hax unit duped over 100 trillion in a few days. They couldnt give gold away fast enough.

So does a new dupe essentially mean bad news for the buyers/sellers. Does Jagex pinpoint the dupe, and the trail and wave their magic cursors to make it disappear?

They usually figure out which accounts are responsible and ban them A.S.A.P. All they do is follow the huge money trail. Duper's usually dump billions all at once to multiple gold buyers. The smarter ones move it steadily off of several different accounts. They're constantly moving the gp and IP's. It's very unlikely they'l roll back runescape. They usually take it with a grain of salt and ban everything they can.

    What is a "dupe?"

Does it mean like cash stack duplication?

    Yes, dupe = duplication.
It doesn't necessarily always come down a gold dupe though, people have found ways to dupe certain items, proceeding to sell them for gold to either the G.E or NPC (There was a small dupe at the beginging of the TH when they introduced tradable blood - You could buy it from the G.E for extremely cheap and sell it at a huge profit to the NPC which wasn't intended and people sat there doing it all day.)

Also, when people mention dupe it again doesn't even necessarily mean gold or items, it could be a bug they are abusing (e.g duel arena bug)

Could you elaborate more on the Duel Arena bug and blood thing? This all seems like very interesting stuff that I hadn't heard of before.

The TH thing wasn't a bug, but players valued the item so low due to it's relative uselessness. It was commonly traded at the GE for a low price, and general store bought it for higher than players. So smart players bought up all the item, and dumped it in the general store making a profit which Jagex termed bug abuse and banned people for.

Jagex banned those players who abused the "bug", it was a fault by Jagex who then called it a bug.

There was a duel arena bug where you could bring a summoning familiar in and they would be on top of the stairs where no one could see them, the player would then swap out their empty vials for vials of some other kind.

That's actually terrible part on Jagex. They banned people for their own screw up in the economy? Losing more faith in 'em day by day.

And how does changing out vials do anything to the economy?

Think about it this way, 2-3 people know about the bug, go around dueling bills after bills to unknowing people and then dump ~80b into the economy through gold stores and other means, it makes a pretty drastic impact on the economy/players.

That bug in the duel arena was patched months ago, can't use beast of burden ability there anymore :p
edit: wasn't even a bug, just an interesting use of game mechanics imo
