I most definitely think they should be treated as equals. Their mental state defines their illness, not them as a person. It is unfortunate that some people would think different, know them before you judge them.

No, they should not be. If they are treated equally, that means that they should have to provide for themselves. They cannot do so, and therefore should be treated as one who relies upon the rest of society.
