MoonGlare has been the name I thought about every time I ever saw graphic design work for the past few years. He normally has fantastic quality, and I've always been beyond impressed with his designs.

Unfortunately, he didn't meet my expectations during my first order. Maybe I set the bar too high for him to reach.

He created me a logo, YouTube Header, and Twitch graphics for 90 USD. All in which were sub-par compared to his displayed work. There were a few complications during the process, so I chose to wait a few weeks before leaving this review. I didn't want to rush the gun, and I typically leave positive feedback even without complete satisfaction.

Logo:
I complimented his work on Skype, but in all reality; the logo wasn't creative. It is a minimalistic design without the uniqueness I expected.

Header:
The YouTube header was the best of all three models, and I cannot critique it that much. It is fine for YouTube, except he didn't create it in the proper size. Instead of fixing the design to match the proper resolution I gave him, he just increased the size of the background.

Twitch Layout:
I mentioned a few times that I wanted all of the designs to correspond to each other. They should be similar due them representing my new stream and YouTube content. These labels seem way different compared to the header and logo. They don't even use the same font.

After mentioning to him that they don't look similar, I suggested the possibility of adding in the light effect from the header. This didn't change the outcome; they still don't correspond very well. The bigger issue is that he didn't respect my request because he then gave me crap that he through together in probably a minute. I'm not sure why he would think these light effects look appealing in the position they were placed. The longer ones that contained more words look horrible.

I had a better idea to place the light effect at the bottom of each image instead of each word. The outcome was much better, but it still doesn't correspond with the other two graphics well.

Conclusion:
After changing the Twitch layout, I decided he had no interest or time to work on this project. I was receiving sloppy work that seemed rushed together. I'm not the greatest with photoshop, but I do have a basic skill-set. I decided that I could work with his designs and manage something. When I asked him for the PSD and high-resolution files, he told me he doesn't provide those. He only provides a PNG uploading with Gyazo or Imgur.

I wanted to make the graphics more appealing. Also, I wanted to use them in my YouTube content and modify them depending on color themes, seasons, etc. To not supply the PSD files seems extremely amateur to me. I didn't realize that it would be an issue when I was purchasing the graphics and gave him my 90 USD.

In the real world, I wouldn't have paid him. Due to going first, I am stuck with graphics that I'm not exactly satisfied. I'm forced to use them because I don't have the funds to afford an entirely new set of graphics. I've started making YouTube content and decided to use his work.

To be honest, I feel a little scammed. I didn't expect to give me the PSDs was an issue. But there is nothing I can do because we didn't have a strict contract. There were no real stipulations except for him making me the graphics. I'm sure he feels like he was in the correct position. In reality, his work was such low quality -- I don't know how he feels like he is protecting his design process. His logo was a gradient overlay with three lines cut out of the corner. You can see the logo up above or as my avatar on Sythe.

MoonGlare seems like an okay guy when talking to him on a personal level. His work ethics and values are a disappointment, to say the least. I'm sad to say that my thoughts all of these years were just put to shame.

YT Header:
That size I gave you would be the optimal size to upload it to your header. There's this thing called a safe area, and anything beyond that region won't show up on computer screens. The reason why it's so big is because of TVs..

As for the PSDs I already mentioned this to you. I'm sorry you didn't think it would be an issue but it's just how I and most other graphics designers work. If you're going to buy graphics from me then don't expect the PSD unless we have discussed it before doing business. It's like asking for the source code along with the app you had coded, that wouldn't make sense unless you're willing to pay for the source code as well.

I have a tendency to keep everything running smooth by staying active during a transaction. Especially when my intention was that the PSD would be provided so that I could make modifications to it.

You are correct. It does allow it to fit on a television screen. The problem is that the logo and text are small compared to the rest of the graphic, which doesn't turn out and an ideal way. It views poorly on a television and has much higher potential for a computer screen.

Once again, these are all slight modification that I could have made myself.

That doesn't change the quality of the work. I was offering changes based on the graphics presented to me.

If you hire a carpenter to build a house, do you expect them to own the wood and nails after the fact?

No.

If you hire an artist to make your paintings, do you withhold the ability to paint on them afterward?

No.

If you hire a web designer to build you a website, do you refuse them the ability to modify the code?

No.

Your example about the source code is incorrect. In most cases the company DOES obtain ownership of the original code. There is typically a contract done up, giving them complete access to modifying the code in the future. Most software developers don't build a portfolio because most of their work is owned by another person. They have no ability to re-use the work in the future or share it with other people.

It wouldn't make sense to hire someone to develop you custom software, just to throw it away when you need to make edits because you don't have access to the code.

In most graphic design cases, you will be given a PSD and any other file format that was used to develop the image. That is apparently not the case on this discussion board, but I wasn't expecting it. I've had previous work done for me numerous times and never had this issue. Even on the ones that didn't supply a contract. You are not protecting your design concepts by releasing a logo PSD that has a few gradients thrown on text with the edges cut out. That is just nonsense.

I'll leave this alone, but I didn't agree with your response's perspective and felt the need to explain myself further.

 

Comparing virtual and non virtual goods doesn't make sense because they're different.

Of course not, like I stated previously I do all minor changes in PSDs for free. Comparing this to a website where you're pretty much given the code either way doesn't make sense.

There wouldn't have been a problem then if we had a contract that said beforehand that you would be needing the PSD's as well.
