    Technology Section Cleanup

    Hey everyone,

My suggestion is to clean up the technology section on the forum.

There is only one sub-section called "Programming" and it contains two versions of programming as categories.

I've been spending a lot of time in Technology and recognized a few different trends. People tend to post a request for hardware and software. It seems a bit cluttered in this section, and there are only a few active threads in the programming categories.

To re-do Technology, I believe these should be the sections:
    Technology
    >Programming
    >Networking
    >Security
    >Hardware
    >Software

    Programming
With this setup, we would merge the two programming categories. Neither of these two is active, and I don't see it necessary to keep them separated. We will write topics about programming languages and concepts.

    Example:
    "Basics of Javascript"

    Networking
Contains random questions regarding networking, different types of wiring and equipment. Command line for Linux, drivers, routers, etc.

    Example:
    "CISCO Router Configuration Question"

    Security
This isn't too active, but it's one of the biggest fields in the computer industry. There are millions of jobs unfulfilled in the industry, and hopefully adding a section will encourage bright minds to share their thoughts or talk about active security hazards.

    Example:
"Microsoft Closes Support for Windows Server 2003."
-- How does this impact my network's security?

    Hardware
I enjoy creating build templates for user's that are not very experienced with choosing a new computer. It's entertaining, and you'll find them actively requested within the technology section.

People have problems with their systems and can ask the community for assistance.

Talk about new devices being released to the market.

    Example:
"Installed New Motherboard; Cannot Access Bios"

    Software
This section will include topics regarding software issues, tools to improve your devices, and general debates on software.

    Example:
"What is everyone's favorite browser to use?"

There is a lot of hardware request, but I feel like the section is a little messy in its current state.

Everyone feel free to share their opinion and suggestion alternative layouts. I'm hoping to promote this section's activity and organization.

    Sincerely,
    Ritysayo

Is technology that active though :O?

I don't have a problem cleaning the board, but is cleaning it going to make it look deader than it already is?

That would be my main concern.

IF cleaning it does not make it deader than it already is, I have no issue with this suggestion :p.

    Great point.

Now, it 's hard to measure how active the forum is in comparison to the rest due to multiple reasons. I can prove that it has enough thread creation to allow more sections to be viable.

In the following image, you'll see that it is one of the most active sections over a large period. I'm using thread creation as a measurement because we're talking about separating newly created threads into distinct parts.

I believe that this does, in fact, promote activity. When you use a single section, the objective of that large section becomes very broad. When you create sub-sections, it encourages the behavior. If I look at a section named "Technology", I might browse and post a thread about one single thing I find interesting. If I see multiple articles like "Software," Hardware," Security,"Networking" and "Programming"; a whole new world of ideas come to mind.

After reading this I don't see why 4th top off topic thread hasn't already been cleaned up, fully support can't see reason it can't be done. But even thought I do understand different between individual section you are proposing I can't see reason to split it up as much as displayed above. Maybe a bit less of split? if it's split to much it will look like dead area in the forums.

Don't agree with the necessity for that many subs. The forum isn't extremely active as is, and I personally feel it's fine as is for now. If it becomes more active, I could see the need.

How about setting up two sub-sections called "Hardware" and "Software." That supplies two broad spectrums. The current programming section can be placed inside the Software sub. It just feels incredibly cluttered right now. If you check my previous post's image, you'll see most of it is filled with Hardware and Software anyway. There are other topics that can be placed in the main section, instead of splitting them into more.

Support if you were to shrink the amount of topics. It's dead already.

I support. There's so many aspects to technology and just putting them all into one sub-forum makes it hard to find what you need.
