    Laptop Overheating?

Bought a new $700 laptop around decemeber, the past week or 2- It's bottom has been UNCOMFORTABLY warm- so warm that its like a heating pad on my legs when using it.

Does this indiciate internal issues? Its typically resting on a oak wooden dresser but its VERY hot.

The laptop is in use 12-18 hours a day, I'm quite worried it might be overheating and causing internal damage.

It's a inspirion 15 5000 series dell from the tag on the inside.

Any thoughts? Is this normal or is there an issue?

Laptops aren't meant to be ran for 15+ hours a day especially while resting on your legs/clothes where it won't get adequate airflow.
Even if it did get air flow laptops still run much much hotter than a desktop.

I suggest broadening your horizons and stepping into the world of Desktops if you want to run something 24/7.

TIP:Try to not run so many CPU heavy tasks at a time.

download hardware monitor or speccy so you can see what kind of temps its running at. If this heat is a new issue it may need to be dusted out or the heatsink fan might need to be replaced.

You should try one of those laptop cooling pads. Basically its something you put under your laptop to ensure there is space between the surface under and the bottom of your laptop, allowing for adequate airflow to the vents. The laptop cooler also has 2 fans which dont really do much, but rather its the distance between the bottom of the laptop and the surface that'll do the most good.

This is something I've been doing ever since I realized my laptop was getting way too hot about 8 months ago. Now it doesn't overheat at all unless I run it on max CPU usage.

I suffered from same problem, and eventually my 3 GB ram got baked, bought a desktop after that, and works fine till date.

I would recommend picking up a cooling pad to help out. Your laptop can handle the heat it puts out, but as many others have said, wasn't designed to be run 15 hours a day.

When I primarily used a laptop I was running into the same problems you are currently having. A cooling pad didn't fix everything, but it definitely helped out. I suggest spending a bit on it as it is a solid investment, and will help stretch the life of your laptop out.

Counter-intuitive to the name, laptops don't do well on your lap. Often times manufacturers will recommend setting the laptop on a extra set of fans or cooling system of some type.

    Or....just buy a Apple laptop.
