i mean, McDavid is not the underdog story. Gostisbehere is way more the underdog

How anyone could choose Panarin over Ghost or McDavid I don't know. sure he's eligible for but cmon the dude played how many seasons of pro hockey in the KHL.

Then again, the meaning of the trophy is up to interpretation

"to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League (NHL)."

If you're voting strictly based off of the idea of "Best Rookie", it goes to McDavid. No questions asked. If you assume McDavid never got injured and then use his PPG ratio then multiply it by 82 games, he's got 86 pts on the year.

Then take into account he plays on the Oilers. The Oil get hemmed into their own zone so often due to overall poor defense that for a lot of the games this season couldnt make break up a cycle or make a break out pass to save their lives. You put McDavid in Panarin's position of playing on the Hawks with a great defense and system and Patty Kane as his linemate and they'd each finish the season with easily over 100 pts.

However, proficient may mean points total. Then Panarin wins fair and square. Ghost for all the records he broke on the Flyers, plus his overall proficiency at a tougher position to play well as a rookie puts him in the conversation easily too.

That all said, I have zero faith in McDavid winning the Calder. Oilers have gotten historically stiffed all the time. Gretzky not being eligible due to playing in the WHA. Nuge tying Landeskog in pts but did it in 20 less games, but Landeskog had more goals so apparently Landeskog gets the trophy. Next year, Yak ties Huberdeau in pts in the same number of games played, Yak had more goals, trophy goes to Huberdeau. Perhaps other statistical factors came into play but realistically Oil got stiffed twice and I would have no issue in believing that it's going to happen again

 

Yeah in terms of raw skill, McDavid is way ahead of everyone else. If it was up to me to interpret what that meant "proficient" would be raw skill, and it would go to McDavid but the Writer's Association has a history of not giving awards to players that missed a large chunk of the season. Also if it was up to me Panarin would not even be in the conversation at all, I have no idea why the KHL isn't considered a professional hockey league where when the WHA and the NHL merged Gretzky was stifled of his Calder because the WHA was somehow considered professional.

Nylander had a 2 point night last night, goddamn I know I say this so much but I'm so hyped for the Leafs of the future lol. After next draft we'll have a whole slew of prospects, already a bunch on the Marlies that are making a big impact already with the Leafs, Marner lighting it up in the OHL, the light at the end of the tunnel????

 

I feel it'll go to Panarin, based on point total. McDavid was injured for too many games to be reasonably in the conversation. Unfortunate, but that's how hockey goes.

well, my prediction near the beginning of the season was caps

I think they'll play the Ducks in the finals. i'll make my playoff tree when all the seeds are announced

 

Heading to DC for vacation and watching the Caps-Blues game Should be exciting but as of late they haven't been playing too well. Can't really blame them as they have the East locked up already but hopefully they can amp it up in time for the playoffs. With the way they've been playing would not be surprised it they were an early first round exit, in which case Bolts/Rangers look the best to make it out of the east imo

 

that should be a pretty good game regardless of whether the Caps are mailing it in a bit so everyone's 100% for the playoffs. i doubt it'll be a first round exit for the caps, they'll likely play Philly or Detroit in the first round and I have it in good confidence they should run them over

I do like the odds of the Bolts going all the way to the cup finals. I was a big Lightning fan when I was younger, when they had the Bulin Wall and Vinny and St Louis and cheered for them all the way in their '03 Cup run.

For the west I would also love to see Colorado snake in and win it all. I fucking love Patrick Roy. Him coaching in the playoffs would be next level intensity lol

 

I highly doubt they'll make it into the playoffs, let alone win the Cup. My money is on the hawks vs the caps

mcdavid with another 2 pts tonight. 45 pts in 41 games.

 

1st period was solid, lived up to my expectations but Caps just fell off hard in the 2nd and the 3rd, blues deserved the win 100%. Was a fun game though, Verizon Center was electric even throughout the 2nd down 3-0, if you guys are ever in town definitely catch a game!

I was on the other side cheering for the Flames, honestly once it got to the playoffs I just wanted a Canadian team to bring it home but I guess being an Oilers fan it would be a bit weird to cheer for them lol

Preds are going on a tear lately 14-2-5 from Feb 12th. With chicago slumping a bit lately I can definitely see them falling to the WC spot and the preds taking that. Only teams that look like they'd be able to knock out the preds with the way they've been playing lately are the top 2 central teams and possibly the kings.

i cheered for the flames last year when they were in the playoffs. i just dont like vancouver, montreal, and i dont care much for toronto but ill cheer for calg, winnipeg and ottawa anytime.

and im maybe down if were not doing it for money. not that i dont like betting but i dont use any virtual payment methods anymore

ive met a few Oilers. Glenn Anderson used to be a family friend. My dad once gave him a ride to a casino on the back of his motorcycle. My uncle actually died by drowning in his pool also.
