What will happen if the chinese own JaGeX

My personal opinion if the Chinese buy out JaGeX/Runescape would be.

• Possibility of purchasing your account back, such as a ban for RWT/botting, maybe a one or two time thing?
• -I could see buying it back after botting/rwt'ing more than once being a HUGE deal because it would ruin the community and not show any punishment for cheating.
  
• I think maybe they will allow RWT of some sort or maybe not be as strict.
  
• Possibility of allowing gambling in game, everyone knows the game flourished when gambling and staking, along with RWT weren't heavily monitored.
  
  
• IMO, if they keep the servers steady and don't do any huge bull shit adding of micro transactions in the game, i see it running fine.
  
• However, when spending $300,000,000 on something, you would usually run some sort of poll/vote between investors/community before making any drastic changes to the game, or it's adios to your $300,000,000
  
• I think if they allow any of what i just said, some of the "nerdier" members and "true runescapers" won't enjoy it/support it, but let's face it.. the game would come back to life.

 

Would cosmetic MTX be a huge deal to many people? rs3 already struggles with this, but I don't think people mind it as long as it is only cosmetics.

I know plenty of games that are MTX as fuck, but it's purely for cosmetics.

You own a burger king, a guy walks in and wants to also own it with you, he happens to purchase a lot of "shares" now this person owns more of the burger king than you, and therefore he will add new seasoned fries or remove the famous whopper if he want's to.. as he owns more.....

 

JaGeX won't let that happen, they're not even sure if it's going to go through. This is what another highly trusted user told me, they're just stocks, it wouldn't affect RS much.

You don't understand how it works. If you have majority ownership of the company you have complete control over the actions of the company with nobody to tell you otherwise. If Jagex's CEO says no to their demands they can fire him on the spot and employ someone else for not acting in the interest of the shareholders.

Anyways, I figured it'll go something along these lines:

• Company buys out Jagex for ___ amount.
• Company starts replicating the game to be suited to Chinese cultures.
• About 6-12 months down the line, Jagex starts a marketing capaign in China to promote the game.
• RuneScape is released in China with standalone servers, changed to maximise MTX in the Chinese region.
• The main servers for RS remain mostly unchanged, maybe getting a few more MTX but mostly just being a steady source of cash flow while they invest elsewhere.
• OSRS won't be touched with MTX.

What you really need to consider is that a LOT of the content in RS is offensive to Chinese cultures. They can't show bones/remains in China so that's the entire prayer skill and a large number of quests/decorations throughout RS that have to be remade.

That takes a LOT of dev time and will change the game massively, so they may as well hold it on different servers and then market that to the 1-1.5b people living in China with the typical MTX maximised gameplay than alienate the current playerbase. It's the same model as a few other games which have standalone servers for certain regions of the world.

 

Hopefully the Chinese realize the earning potential on being able to play Runescape on iDevices and start implementing a way to make it happen. I almost guarantee a spike in popularity. The Chinese will probably make more micro-transactions and I feel like the game will turn into a Maplestoryesque game where you need to pay for the best items.

 

Honestly I'm thinking this is what is going to happen. I'm not worried about osrs/rs3 being combined with he Chinese due to their laws and they'll know not to fuck with osrs.

 

I don't think too much will change in-game.

 

The two companies are still in discussion about it. It's not set in stone yet. I personally don't care as long as they dont make drastic changes.

 

I might actually be happy if it becomes pay 2 win. Many will be mad, but fuck them. I'm greedy.

My opinion as well. I honestly don't think it would be a pay2win game ever. Runescape has never been about that. Companies don't spend 100s of millions of dollars to possibly destroy a game for a quick buck as that would also be extremely risky. Destroying the game would also mean the stock prices plummeting. I don't mind cosmetics and whatnot as long as it doesn't affect gameplay too much. More money would just mean they could hire more people to work on and improve the game.

They can do w/E they want imo aslong as there won't be any MTX it's all good.
Ofcourse I hope they'll expand the oldschool team etc but that probably won't happen.

Your first point about buying back a back account seems like something the chinese would allow aswell

Also I would think there would be some changes because they will market it loads in china like it was mentioned before and culture changes will have to happen in game. I hope nothing does change but I guess change isn't always bad. (Eoc change isn't really helping my point but still)

 

Probably will be more lenient with bans, at least I hope so lol.
