Do you think Assisted Suicide is Okay?

Within a few months, Canada will be passing a law that will legalize assisted suicide.

The federal government is scrambling to understand the implications of top court ruling that allows individuals across Canada to go to court to seek personal exemptions to the criminal law against assisted suicide, which remains in effect for four more months.

While many welcome the legalization of assisted suicide, many regard it with deep aversion for personal, religious or philosophical reasons. The government needs to take all perspectives into consideration as it crafts laws and creates safeguards to ensure the process is not abused. Physicians and other health-care professionals should not be compelled to participate if they choose not to.

Would you support the legalization of assisted suicide? Why and why not?

 

You are no less responsible as a murderer is if you assist someone to commit suicide. I can't see t any different then that.

 

I wonder though why it is getting passed in Canada. There must be a huge demand for it for them to legalize it.

 

I feel like its completely up to whoever feels like they need an exit. I don't mean people who have some form of depression, but some form of insurmountable pain or anguish of some sort.

I feel like depression and sadness are things that can be treatable and usually suicide from these forms of things are just permanent solutions to temporary problems.

 

Yeah, i read a story today about a girl who lives in the UK who has a very bad case of Lupus Disease. Some days she can barely move and she has these attacks on her immune system which makes it feel like all the bones in her body are breaking! I cant even begin to understand how this woman has coped for nearly 10 years (she contracted it from an insect bite at 12 and is now 21).

I believe that if no cure is found to make her life livable again she's contemplated going to switzerland for the assisted suicide route. - i think this is a perfect example of using assisted suicide for the right reason.

 

Hard thing to judge, but I think I agree for it under circumstances. Lot of things to consider but like I said, hard to judge.

 

I agree with it as long as it comes with a complete physical and psychological evaluation to make sure that it is not just a temporary state of mind or a more easily treatable condition making them want to do this.

They already do these kinds of evaluations for people wanting to get sex changes in many places.

It may also be a good idea to make a requirement beforehand that the client go to 10 weeks of therapy with a registered psychologist along with medication management by a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist if the client consents.

 

Now there's talk of age priority. Do you, and anyone else who is following this story, think that its fair to put an age on euthanasia?

 

Would you, yourself assist someone of commuting suicide? Basically it comes down to health practitioners to do that. However, if you had to be in their shoes, would you still do it?

 

I agree with it in instances of terminal diseases where quality of life is extremely poor, in any other situation I don't see it being sensible.

 

I know this is a bit besides the subject but coming from someone who's been in combat (Iraq), you don't know how you'll react until it happens. I'd hope you wouldn't immediately think that you'd just give up all hope if you're ever in the situation of someone threatening your life.

Sometimes it is like that though. When they say pull the plug, it can literally be as simple as that, pulling a plug on someone. One of my good friends grandmothers was tired of being hooked up to a machine to live and was in constant pain for about 2 years. After a few weeks of debate she finally convinced him it was her time. So they just pulled the plug, walked out of the room for a few minutes and then...yeah. It is a bit grim but its how it works.

What sort of circumstances could be considered a factor?

 

I work as a Paramedic and I often spend some of my shift doing Community Paramedicine. If you don't know what that is, look it up. But I see a lot of critically ill and sick people who have been battling diseases and chronic problems that are causing them to be in pain and discomfort. They're unable to sleep at night, nauseous all the time, or feel like absolute shit for day after day and year after year.

So why shouldn't they be able to make that choice? In the United States, a trip to the hospital VIA Ambulance can easily cost upwards of $800 dollars with a Paramedic. That doesn't include the thousands of dollars they spend at the Hospital just to be told to go back home. Maybe they're not even allowed to go back home and they're stuck in a hospital bed 24/7 for their life.

If they want assisted suicide, I think that's their choice. Some people would rather go out on their own terms than leave $100,000's of medical bills to their families. I've met families that have lost loved ones to suicide via gunshot or hanging because the individual was chronically ill and didn't want his family to suffer financially because he was sick and the bills were getting expensive.

 

But its okay for you for others to do it for you?

 

What about children who are far too young to decide for themselves. Does their parents have the right to end their life? At what age can assisted suicide be applied to?

Well you said its a great thing under circumstances. So I'm assuming you would let others do it if it doesn't affect you. Unless you think otherwise?

 

I'm wondering for people who think that assisted suicide is okay if they would do it themselves. For instance, you agree that for some circumstances assisted suicide is okay but its only okay if you don't do act?

 

I agree with this. I think making somebody is suffer is very unfair, taking them out of their pain is the most humane thing to do imo.

 

I see it as if the person really doesent want to be and there in pain it's there choice.
