    The Future of RuneScape 3

I've played on and off since 2006. I've quit for about half that time, but I've been around for all of the major updates and changes to RuneScape and some of those have been nice and refreshing, whereas some have been quite disturbing. Back in 2006-2009 there used to be 100k+ players on without fail. Period. I remember once back in 2007/8 it cracked the 300k online WOW. Nowadays, it's only a fraction of that, and it makes me a little bit worried!

Basically, I am just looking for someone to put my mind at ease. I don't want to see this game that I've grown up with and that's taught me so many things - die. Is Jagex trying it's best to promote RuneScape 3 to try and expand it's player base? Is it still profitable as all hell? Are there even new members joining? I don't really speak to many people starting up the game anymore, so I don't know....

Please if you can all refrain from negative comments and feedback such as "RS3 sucks", "rs is dead", "fagex", etc. because this is a positive thread. Thanks :)

MMORPGRS is a streamer based in the UK who was featured on the RS documentary, he said during the preview of the documentary they showed some stats of Runescapes peak years (06/07) and the fall when free trade was introduced/EOC. Evidently both OSRS and RS3 are on on the rise once again since then. Don't forget a large majority of RS3 players are f2p, something Jagex needs to pay more attention to. Releasing some f2p content, even if it's temporary, could really do some good for the game.

Nothing to worry about, RS3 is not going to shut down anytime soon. It's doing fine at the moment, 07 is doing better though. RS3 could survive on 30K players if it had to.

Both heading down the toilet eventually, playerbase will slowly dwindle down into nothing.

im waiting for the day jagex announces End Of Life for runescape. Gold prices will crash and everything will go to shit.

Its inevitable if you see the course theyve taken.

No chance this is ever gonna be a positive thread. They just fucked up, 98% of the rs3 content is left for dead.

    P.S. im a realist not a negativist

No chance it can be what it used to be no matter what they do. It will not 'end' any time soon or die out, it'll be running for a long time still in my opinion just with a lower player base.

one thing people seem to forget about is bots. Sure, there were 300k "players" online but how many of them were the default bald guy running around chopping trees etc?
Right now with the release of invention i quite often see 100k players online. Usually about 80, but still.

This concern for runescape "dieing" "getting shut down" has been going on for years once they took out the wild back in 07 a lot of people lose there shit. Less and less people will play rs3 but if it keeps making Jagex money it wont stop. To keep your mind at ease I still play tibia from time to time and that game has fricken 2d graphic lol that game is mad old and still haven't stop pushing out updates.

    it makes millions....

in the first few years the player base was like 3000 online when i started

it was so simple and fun back then now i think to much stuff in the game makes it very difficult for a new player to stay on feeling that they are so far behind everyone else.

They should promote 07 more on the homepage as well as classic, which i still play/bot on :)

The game's obviously past its prime, but its still very healthy. And the new NXT client may hopefully rejuvenate it. Maybe even allow it to be distributed on Steam? That could be a giant boon for the playerbase.

Runescape is fine. Its not going to be as popular as it was but it still has a good player base. I am guessing it is still profitable considering they have not shut down the site yet.

If neopets hasn't shut down yet, Runescape will come last at shutting down.

I guarantee it will never reach 200k+ players again because the concept of runescape doesn't really catch anyone. Grinding for hours for a cape isn't that appealing

I believe it is actually headed in the right direction. More and more updates to draw in new or returning players (NXT, new skills, etc). Although a lot of content may be dead, some of it does get reworked to remain relevant. It may not have the number of players it once had, but a game that makes this much money won't go anywhere soon.

It will reach that peak again when gambling/dicing comes back.

People are terrible at putting things into a broader scope. "Runescape is dying, it will never peak again, it's just going downhill..."

Only partially true, RS3 AND OSRS are both gradually growing in players, and as for Runescape Peaking in 07...yes that is true...to date. Over a long enough timeline there can be an even higher peak.

People are naturally alarmists and pessimists, if you expect the negative you will be less "let down" when the negative happens.

Look at social media, which game are the largest most popular YouTubers playing and promoting? Oldschool. The future of RS3 in my opinion doesn't look bright. It seems to me that they just keep adding content that is more profit based rather than attempting to improve the quality of the game. I don't know what they can do at this point for they have dug themselves so far into a hole with RS3. Can you imagine how much they'd have to do to try and get the game back to it's former glory?
