Is LoL the best game ever?

I'm not talking about your favourite, although it could be.. but do you think League is the best game ever?

Here are some points I have come up with to support this question..

• Revolutionised 'E-Sports' and E-sports betting
• Made huge progress since the game was introduced
• 129 unique champions/characters with different play styles to suit different peoples ways of playing.
• Game of tactics and always ways to get better
• Competitive ranked system to compete and try to be the best
• NOT pay to win, everyone has the same chance of winning each game
• Forever improving.. Balance changes, graphic updates, more champions, more skins etc.
• Team based game (could be negative too)

These are just some of the points. Of course there are some negatives, but what is your opinion?

 

To me, no. Most popular game? Yes. Did it revolutionize ESports and open the doors of professional gaming? Yes. I have played League since the first year it was released and was hooked for 2-3 years, got burnt out once I reached D1 so I moved to CS:GO. League is definitely the most popular PC game of all time.

 

I don't think so. If you're really looking for some of the best games made to date you should consider things like:

Ocarina of Time (Revolutionised videogames at the time)
Half Life 2 (Still holds up well to this day)
Grand Theft Auto 3 (Huge progression in open sandbox games)
Halo: Combat Evolved (Holds up well to this day)

There's also some other games like Perfect Dark, Metriod Prime, Mario, Shadow of the Colossus, Morrowind etc which have been huge successes. LoL hasn't brought anything big other than introducing E-Sports to western culture IMO as E-Sports already existed for Dota/Starcraft in other regions.

My personal favourite is Mass Effect 2 but it feels like it flew under the radar for a lot of people despite having extremely good ratings. Again, a game which made a huge impact on the gaming scene by bringing something new and doing it extremely well, rather than copying an existing structure and making it more player friendly (League vs Dota).

 

You're right, especially with regards to the aspect of revolutionizing gaming. But with regard to E-Sports, League really catapulted E-Sports into where it is now. There was E-Sports prior to League's existence but the scene was miniscule, it was very small. Now a days, E-Sports is recognised world-wide. Before this you'd only know of E-Sports if you were an avid gamer. If you look at Twitch stream for example, you'll find that the viewership for tournaments are so much greater than they were in the past (you could argue that this is because streaming itself has improved but the scene back then wouldn't have generated such interest). League leads in viewership of course, followed by games such as Dota and CS:GO.

The more popular and beloved games of my generation. I love playing league but I found Halo, Runescape and pokemon more enjoyable then league. Halo was life when i was 11-15

When you say best, that DOES mean favoritism.

Best game? No. One of the most successful games? Yes.

 

I feel like League and how it fits in with e-Sports just has to do with a lot of luck and great timing. E-Sports were on the rise with or without League, and there already were popular MoBA's out / coming out that people would have picked up instead.

I'm not saying it isn't a great game, and that it hasn't expanded E-Sports more than most other games would have, but I do think it really all stems from it coming out at the right time.

 

Fair point. It's success in the realm of E-Sports definitely DOES stem partly from great timing, as you said E-Sports was already growing. It's success in pushing E-Sports to where it is now also relies on League's massive popularity, no other game at the time boasted the amount of players League had. It was undeniably popular hence many players world wide would bare witness to Championships out of interest.

 

Oh definitely, and it's also lucky in the aspect that most of the world has picked it up. CS:GO is pretty much EU based, US slowly coming along. SC2 I feel like was dominated by Asia. Console games are pretty much limited to NA. Don't know shit about Dota, but I think it's represented worldwide to an extent (I know the last "world champions" were from NA), whereas League is BIG in NA, South America, EU, and all over Asia.

League also has done a TON to normalize their format, and bringing e-sports closer and closer to eventually franchising their teams similar to NFL, NBA, MLB etc.

 

What about starcraft? I thought that was big in the e-sports scene before league.

I never followed it closely, but I believe it was really large all over, until Korea pretty much dominated it and many viewers lost interest.

There was also a huge match-fixing scandal, and updates that drove the game to its demise.

 

Well it has to be good considering it's the most played video game in the world. Could be better though but riot does a good job
