    Fishing

So I thought I might create a thread about my favourite hobby and see if any other sythers(?) are keen fisherman. If there are it would be a good thread to discuss brands, techniques, knots etc.
I personally have 3 rods (jigging rod, light spinning rod and egi rod) and target 3 main fish (Yellowtail Kingfish, Mulloway and snapper) from a 5m fibreglass centre console boat.
Please, I hope there are some fisherman among us. Join in the chat!

    Fishing

Never personally been much for fishing. I went once with my dad and caught a small fish, maybe like 6 inches or so. I've been invited a few times but ended up not going for various reasons. I've always heard that fishing takes a lot of patience. While I do have plenty of patience, it's not something I necessarily having fun exercising. Are there any types of fish you'd recommend I aim for that don't take much patience to catch?

Not much of a fisher anymore. I probably have 500$+ worth of gear sitting in my shed but I don't use any of it more than 3-4 times a year. I'd love to get out and try lobster fishing. Probably the biggest reason that I'm not much of a fisher is that I'm not a fan of fish in itself. I love shellfish, however.

    Fishing

I am a avid fisherman, I mainly focus in-shore. However i dont say no to going offshore or bass whacking if im bored. I target Snook, Reds and, Trout mostly. I live in Florida approximately 3 miles from the Gulf. I've lived here approximately 21 years and I've been fishing since day one. It takes years to develop the skills to be successful. Water temp, tides, migration patterns and, breeding cycles. Even knowing all of this i still have days with no luck. I mainly focus holes, drop offs, oyster bars and, strong currents. I use two 7'6 redbones medium light with 3500 stratic FI reels. I use 10lb power pro and make my own 20lb liters. My rod and reel combo's are approximately 250.00 each and the line 20.00. I have approximately 500.00 in gear. I used to have 3x as much but a few years ago kids robbed my jeep. I mainly prefer jon boats or canoe's with trolling motors. I push pole into my designated area so i dont scare anything. Ive learned the hot spots and strike area's for the majority of my target fish. I've developed a wonderful cast that helps me put my lures 2-5 underneath the mangroves. ( Most monster snook sit in these holes along the mangroves). I almost never fish with live bait unless it's a drinking/fishing session. I avoid fishing most flats because i hate dealing with catfish and sharks.

The other dude in these pictures is my old roommate. Its the only other guy ive met with the same passion for fishing inshore.

Ohhhh by the sounds of those fish, you must be an Australian, yes?

I used to love fishing when I was younger actually. Hooking onto Black Bream with a little rod down the river was just the most awesome fun. King-George Whiting have got to be my favourite fish to eat though, catch a lot of those where I'm from :)

I have terrible patience but I mostly do a different type of fishing where I'm always doing something. Such as working lures, trolling etc. I can never fish the same spot for 20 minutes+ if I'm not catching anything haha. In terms of a fish you should catch, maybe change the technique of catching it. Plenty of resources online.

Haha, same as me mate, I don't like eating fish that much but I love octopus squid etc and often keep the excess live squid I catch for bait, to use for dinner.

Nice mate, you fish from a boat or LB?

    Great pictures mate.
You do different types of fishing I guess in the lake so your setup's different to mine however the size of the fish look like good sports! I like the Australian species as a majority of them are pelagic thus it takes more technique such as 'tides, water temps' etc. I recently got a light combo with a stradic 2500 ci4+ and 15lb power pro for some hard fighting fish so if any big ones come should be interesting. Hopeing to use this setup to flick soft plastic lures around structure, bouys etc. It's true fishing does require skill and practise to understand where fish might be located by looking at the sounder etc.
Heres a good video of someone catching some small (50-60CM Kingfish) on light gear around the places I would normally fish (inside Sydney Harbour). These fish can grow up to 45kg and 1.2-1.5m. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7v6fKoUYI5o

Yeah, from Sydney. Bream and whiting are always good fun to catch and I have fond memories of catching bream when I first went fishing when I was young.

I dont fish lakes often at all, I fish saltwater 99% of the time. I usually use soft jigs and hard lures mostly. Depending on the water depth and current i run 1/8-3/8 weighted hook for my soft jigs. We have plenty of kingfish here as well. I usually run a kingfish rig consisting of 2 trouble hooks approximately 12-18 inches apart. I only set up a kingfish set up when im fishing for grouper and want something on the top of the water. Deep sea fishing is way to expensive though. The rods, reels and gear are so expensive. Not to mention you need a huge boat and tons of gas. I'm all about slamming those 36in snook in 2 ft water along the mangroves.

I don't right now, maybe in the future. Its a great excuse to get outdoors and spend time with some friends.

I don't prefer the taste of fish, or seafood in general. I don't mind preparing and cooking for others though. If I did like it, I'd definitely be more likely to go out more often.

I think your thinking of a different fish? King Mackeral? This is a description of the 'Australian/New Zealand' Kingfish.

"The yellowtail kingfish or southern kingfish, S. l. lalandi, is a subspecies of yellowtail amberjack, a jack of the genus Seriola, found off southeastern Australia and the northeast coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Very little is known of the kingfish's biology, including their habitat preferences throughout juvenile life stages, migration patterns, and wild reproductive behaviour. Adults live around rocky reefs, rocky outcrops and dropoffs in coastal waters, and around pinnacles and offshore islands. Maximum length is often reported to reach up to 180 cm. Kingfish can be eaten in a variety of ways, including grilling, sashimi, and drying."

When I'm not trolling but casting, I use soft lures or as we call them 'soft plastics' however when I'm trolling I use hardbodies such a x-raps etc. I use similar jig heads to you, 3/8 even up to 1/2. Game gear is pretty expensive however you could get an equally expensive light tackle setup using high quality gear such as a stella or saltiga. You need to come fish the GBR one time dude. Great amount of diversity and a lot of fun! Just need to take a few sea sickness tablets as the reef causes some pretty large swell :p

Ohh man. I use to love fishing, so chilling and relaxing.
By far one of the best ways to relax. I used to go fishing to the see from the beach with a friend from time to time. Last time was over 10 years ago :/
Hope to find the time and start doing it again.

Only fishing related thing I have worth telling is when I was about...10 I was fishing with my Guardian in Montauk. i caught my very first keeper striped bass, I was so excited. As he was measuring it on the boat I watched it flop out of his hands right back into the water. To this day I won't let it go.

Wouldn't mind learning how to flyfish some day, I know it requires a considerable amount of skill to do successfully.

Only been fishing 6 times, my dad is a Fnatic. We mostly go for Snappers, haven't really attempted anything bigger. We use soft baits, that seems to work well for us.
