It's really just Summer and the Christmas period where the rises happen, right? I've never seen a rise at any other time except for perhaps major updates.

 

This year the rise wasn't as dramatic as previous years. I expect to see a larger bump around Chinese new year. However, with so many major gold shops based outside of China this year, the Chinese New Year bump may be less substantial than previous years as well.

 

Excuse me for being really fucking dumb but why do the prices rise at Chinese new year?

 

I'm gonna guess it's due to Chinese people taking time off? Which means maybe they gold farm less and more Chinese players are buying.

Are there even legit chinese players? I've never seen one

 

Until this year the RSGP market was majorly run by Chinese groups

 

Haven't seen many people in China that legitimately play RS. They would make up a small fraction of the userbase, and definitely the majority of Chinese people involved with RS are doing so for real money gains.

What many people don't realize is that the Chinese still produce a large amount of wealth in the game. They have bot farms and other "gold farming" operations that are then resold to companies within China. The majority of these sellers don't speak English and have little to no interaction with Western websites / sellers.

Nearly everybody in China takes Chinese New Year off (which is typically a 1-2 week holiday). During this time, these gold producers stop adding gold to the economy, and this results in a temporary shortage. Chinese sites have to find gold from Western suppliers, and this increases the rates for the duration of the holiday. Happens every year, and the jump in price is significant. It's an interesting time to be trading.
