What makes runescape so addicting?

Obviously many of you would hate to admit being "addicted" to a game, but its inevitable that mmorpg's and video games in general get us humans addicted.

Many people are addicted to Runescape, why do you think that is?

 

Have you ever thought that when you level up or achieve something you get a pop up? I believe it's that thing congratulating you on your next level that fundamentaly hooks you on an mmo, you feel rewarded and you want that feeling again.

That's just two my cents about it.

 

My entire account was botted since level 3 though, now its 1800 total level (not a single skill was done legit, srs), so I really don't think that applied man

 

How did you not get caught?

 

I've played since OSRS came out, stopped botting on my main when I noticed the increase in macro bans about a year and 3 months ago. I did get banned for 2 days on my max main tho, as well as permanently banned on several other accounts.

 

Easy one word: Profit.

But when I was little it had something to do with the satisfaction of pking someone and getting to take all of their stoof.

 

The progress factor of the game is really addicting.

 

The fact that there's always something to do. You can never "complete" the game. Even if you were to do everything unlockable like a completionist cape in RS3, there's still more to do like having fun with friends, minigames for fun, pking, etc..

 

This I guess. Now I've quit tho, still do fire cape service but I don't play anymore.

 

Definitely the "next level" feel. You want to get something, say 65 thieving to be able to thieve a certain new person. Once you reach that, then you want to reach say 75 to get to the next thing. Next thing you know, you're 99, but you want to get another 99 to trim that cape. Then you want to get the max cape. It just keeps on going.

 

The grind that you do when playing. For me it's always been about the goal, and achieving it. That's ultimately what makes it addicting for me.

Well the only reason I keep logging on is to stake.

 

The fact that there is always something to advance in. Reach your goals and so on.

 

I see, but gambling in itself is very addictive, so you aren't actually addicted to the game but rather to the gambling aspect of it.

 

Its a well put together game that is the original from way back when.

 

Being a kid that was born of having Tagalog as a primary language, Runescape (along with other games) surprisingly helped enhanced my English vocabulary..both the good and bad ones. In a way it was a win-win for me back then considering that I was being educated AND entertained by the game at the same time.

 

For me the grind is the addicting part. Of course staking/pking/rwting is also fun

 

Progression for me.

 

All of these, "viable" answers are great, but I don't think truly encompass why RS is so damned addicting. I started at age 11-12 running around like a chicken with my head cut off not knowing what I was doing.. Ive been off the game for years now, and am more than twice the age of when I started. But for some reason STILL come back to these forums from time to time because the draw of the excitement it brought me for all those years rushes back momentarily.
