Turkey takes down Russian jet.

From what I've seen so far they took it down because it was in their airspace for a brief period. So far NATO has supported their decision but with Russia now having anti-air defence systems S400 to take down Turkey planes flying through Syria do you think things are about to get really ugly?

They might. But aggression by Russia against a NATO ally wouldn't be very smart in that region. Then again, Russia doesn't always act rationally in terms of its foreign policy

Them's fighting words if I've heard any. I do doubt the situation will escalate, the leaders of the world can't be that egotistic to start a war over Syria of all places, but I sure ain't holding my breath.

There's also a certain irony of Putin of all people calling another country accomplices of terrorists. Does he somehow believe that Al-Assad and his regiment are the good guys?

I believe AirSpace is kind of necessary if countries want to be able to insure national security. Same logic applies to international waters

 

Russia has already had anti air defense systems in Syria. Anyone who is willing to have air craft in a war torn region would be smart enough to already have those systems in place, they are just saying that they're now putting them in place as a sign of strength to deter Turkey from pulling anything else.

This isn't the first time Russia has trespassed into restricted airspace or other restricted locations around the world. They wanted this to happen, they want a war, that's the whole reason they are even helping Syria. If they didn't want to get shot down then they wouldn't have went into the restricted airspace of a country that has rebels from their own country who are fighting in Syria (who russia has been bombing btw).

Maybe the United States should learn from Turkey on how to handle acts of aggression and "bullying".

 

point valid although I don't think USA shooting down Russian airplanes would have the same effect than turkey, if USA shooted down russians it would most likely escalate into a war

 

If you are interested at all on what the Kurdish have to say about Turkey then follow the page "Lions of Rojava" and subscribe to a person named "Jordan Matson". The lions are a page for the YPG/YPJ Kurdish forces whom are currently fighting ISIS. Their intelligence suggests that Turkey is in fact aiding and has been aiding ISIS for their tenure. Matson believes that Turkey should be removed from NATO. As far as the shooting of the aircraft, who really knows. I truly hope this doesn't extend further than what it really is. This world is going down hill, and fast.

 

I agree Turkey should be removed from Nato. Shooting down a Russian aircraft without consulting allies then expecting protection when the Russian pose no immediate threat to Turkey prior to this engagement, only ISIS, is sort of a lose cannon decision.

 

Yep i agree! Thats why they should learn to think before making any serious actions.

Reading more on it...the Russian jet was only in the airspace from 17-30seconds? Even if airspace was violated, shooting down the jet was probably really unnecessary considering it didn't pose a threat

Are you kidding? Every country has airspace .. Its literally the air above their country. Controlling airspace is a matter of national security, would you want armed fighter jets flying over your house. Oh and then there's the matter of controlled airspace for commercial aircraft..

Back OT, honestly I thought WWIII may of just formally kicked off. The fact that Russia played it cool is kinda disconcerting.. The last thing we need right now is war with Russia. Turkey needs to be reprimanded in some manner IMO.

They were in a restricted air space that they knew they weren't allowed to be in. This also isn't anywhere near the first time that Russia has flown/traveled into restricted areas, especially within that exact same space that is marked on that map. It's simple, if you trespass onto land multiple times and get warned by more than one NATO ally more than just a few times, along with all of your other acts of aggression towards other regions in the world (yes i'm referring to Ukraine) then you're just asking for trouble.
