    Is man selfless?

This question while it might not seem controversial, can raise quite a lot of thought.
Do you think that the whole point of life as a human is to naturally assist the lives of others and continue the progression of man? Since we would be working towards a common 'Utopian' goal we would then be selfless in our combined effort to better the future of our species. There are obviously some people who are not selfless, we could look at the majority of people incarcerated, and a large amount of the free population. But do these people turn selfish from negative society factors? The fact that nearly every human being has a job or task that further advances the human race in some kind also points to the conclusion that man is selfless. Even people locked up still form a task, maybe it is basic like sewing but they are still contribution in a small way.

So thus I ask of you, Is man selfless or selfish? Comment below your 2 cents.
If its a dumb question let me know and Ill delete it, It's 5am here.

You cannot assume that. That claim is just that, a claim. There is no proven arguments widely accepted for that to become fact.

As for the rest of your argument, it's difficult to say that the purpose of humanity is selflessness, and to further the race together. Mother nature always tends to favor survival of the fittest, where if you are not up to standards, others will leave you to die. Civilization has simply made it more difficult for us to be able to follow the natural ways of that.

    Is man selfless?

Human beings have evolved to be selfish for survival. It is a hardwired biological and evolutionary trait of our species. Some people may actively go out of their way to be "selfless" but often this is merely a front or facade as their actions still belie ulterior motives.

    Is man selfless?

It's hard to say anything about mankind in general, but people work to preserve their own rational self interest. There are some people who do selfless things like make anonymous donations, or sacrifice their own time for someone else. However, it would seem to make sense that selfless people will get naturally selected against in favor of selfish people.
